Just one couldn't hurt....

That should fix any case torsion flex issues, and a work of art to boot!

Always the sceptic...if someone had said they were getting custom gears made..I'd have thought they were FOS....this guy absolutely did it.

Then to then go and machine a complete new casing from a billet. It really is truly unbelievable.

The guy did seem to imply the gears would be cheaper than the likes of PPG offer.....which for a one off build is truly hard to believe. Clearly he has access to some serious machinery, as gears and that casing arent just something you throw together at home !

That is beautiful. I program and run full 5-axis CNC mills and I dream of things like this. If only I had free reign of the shop for a couple weeks. There is so much stuff I'd like to make.

That is a piece of art... Would love to try something like that out...

Agreed, the machinery is amazing... I know of a huge mill for sale, don't have the details on it, and not my forte, but wow...

We need to collaborate on this... Maybe if/when the oilfield comes back.... We have a four axis machine in the shop and a lathe with live tooling... It's mostly beyond me other than installing material to be cut, and removing the finished product...

I've always wanted to get into the automotive performance industry. Just not much of that around here. A lot of what I do is for the medical industry which is pretty cool but I'd rather be making car parts. hah

Milling paths are cake for the really good guys and nightmares for mere mortals. The exterior of the case isn't that complex in terms of head movements. I think it could be done on your 4 axis.

Im curious what the total cycle time is on the complete case.

I'm guessing this would somewhat be determined by the aggressiveness of the tooling used... What its capable of... You would know better than me... We've done a few parts that were taking other shops 6 minutes and we managed to get it down to 7 minutes... obviously this case could take a few hours or more... I wonder what their cost per minute of machine time is...

True, but the drawing would take lots of time, and the interior would be a booger... at least for this mere mortal...

That would definitely determine the time it would take. I would guess a few hours just on the outside. I'm a stickler for fine surface finishes so I would probably have a couple hours left on it. Fine finishes = small stepover = lots of passes in the toolpath = lots of time. And we all know that time is money.

We could scan the interior of an exiting case

Interior in some ways would be the easy bit ? It's just an open hole, only the bearing and selector shaft holes would need to be in precise locations and depths etc.
