The 2SS makes 426. Supercharge that at 40% and you get 596...in a car that weighs approx. 300lbs less and costs approx 12K less. Oh yeah, and Ford wouldn't "pony up" for an IRS again either. I guess I'm missing MT's point here.
im pretty sure the camaro SS doesnt even weigh 100 lbs less, nevermind 300 lbs less.

isnt the camaro SS 3860? the 2010 gt500 is 3924 last i checked. 64lbs is hardly 300lbs

C&D is saying some strange things too.

C&D Mustang article

Quote:
Stepping up to V-8 power opens up a bit more space between the Mustang GT and its competition, yet the $30,995 Camaro SS appears to be in another league with its 422-hp, 6.2-liter, V-8 and choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Also getting the makeover for 2010 is the Shelby GT500, which now makes 540 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque from its supercharged 5.4-liter V-8. A six-speed manual is the only transmission choice, with coupes basing at $47,175 and convertibles starting at $52,075. The Challenger SRT8 is the only proper competitor for the GT500, but it is cheaper ($40,945) and its 6.1-liter, Hemi V-8 is less powerful (425 hp).
Huh?? The Challenger is the only proper competitor? The Camaro SS is more qualified than the Dodge, lighter and one more hp .

The thread title is a bit misleading. When I first saw the topic, I thought that Ford was taking a shot at Camaro, but actually it is Motor Trend stirring the pot. I'm just saying...

Yes, sadly some here insist on thinking the SS is some featherweight or something.

True but the fact remains that it is lighter and has a VERY good chance of being faster with a supercharger as well.

It's not different than the previous Generation Camaro/Mustang.

Magazines always put the Z28 and Cobra against one another instead of the proper lineup comparisons (if you're going by comparable $$)-

V6 Camaro v. V6 Mustang
Z28 v. GT
SS v. Cobra

I'm sure the magazines just knew there wouldn't be anything interesting to read if all they could say was that the Z28 put the GT to shame so they chose to go with the only model that could compete.

It's obviously going to happen again in this Generation.

Dont kid yourself, the gt500 has a fully forged bottom end. It can make almost 1000hp easily. Like everyones saying, the gt500 and the SS just arent on the same level. Even with a bolt on supercharger.

The Camaro won't weigh much less once you add a supercharger and an intercooler, especially considering that the GT500 weighs ~3900 lbs which is within 100 lbs or so (I can't find an accurate weight on the 2010 GT500)

the SS would weigh more with a s/c and intercooler, or at least even. granted it would most likely outperform the gt500 at that point, but a blown engine would sure ruin your day.

Color combo is hideous....

Also - this article is almost identical to a conversation I had with a random guy at a transmission shop a couple of weeks ago. He started saying things like "Oh man, the 2010 stang is gonna beat the !@*( out of the camaro, blah blah"... and I looked at him kind of funny for a second, until he said, he was talking about the GT500 Shelby. At that point, I just let him go on and didn't even try to inform him that his comparison isn't really valid considering one is blown and one is not... not to mention the price tag difference, etc.

Oh well, should've expected this anyway.

I saw that cover at Barnes & Noble which set me off on a 20 minute rant that I am sure bored the hell out of my girlfriend. I don't really see the logic in comparing two cars with a $15K price difference.

So let's reverse roles and put a $15K handicap on Ford and compare. That would be like comparing a 426HP Camaro 1SS ($31K) to the 140HP Ford Focus ($16K)..."Take THAT Focus!!!"
