Cars built at the Oshawa plant

We all know the Gen5 Camaro is built at the Oshawa plant. It's recently been reported that GM is spending 117 million on this plant for the front wheel drive Cadillac XTS slated for the 2013 model year.

Also the Alpha platform for the ATS Cadillac will be at the Lansing plant.

My question is "As a norm do plants run mulitple platforms and would we expect the Gen6 Camaro to be built in Oshawa or Lansing"?

Plants used to be set up to run "similar" models based on the same platform, (Oshawa Car Plant used to run Chevy Impala & Monte Carlo, Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix, Oshawa Truck used to run Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra). The Oshawa Plant was refitted to be a "Flex" Plant, meaning that multiple platforms could be run in one plant with minimal change over.

On the Gen 6, that's a good question. Used to be that plants would actually bid on making the car. Don't know if GM is still making the plants do that or not.

Doesn't really matter what platform a car's on, Oshawa can probably build it.

Right now they're building W-body Impalas, EpII-based Regals, Zeta-based Camaros, and Theta-II-based Equinoxes.

As for whether or not the Alpha-based Camaro will transition to LGR, that's debatable...LGR seems to be becoming a Cadillac plant more than anything.

Don't quote me on this but i'm fairly sure that some GM higher up's said that Oshawa would be the ONLY plant building the camaro in the future. now how far into the future i'm not sure... i'm not sure if they meant the future meaning convertible, and Zxx (before either the convertible or ZL1 were announced) or beyond. this was at a event when only the coupe was on the market.

Altho i'd love to see Lansing build a camaro, i could pick my car up at the plant! hahaha (yeah i know it wouldnt happen and it'd prob still take 3 weeks for it to travel 60 miles to me lol )

Very Normal, even run front wheel drive and rear wheel drive assemblys back to back. I was working at the mustang / mazda 6 plant for work. Every other car was a mustang and mazda to different drivetrains and multiple engines. Even the awd assembly for the 6. I was like any chance of accidently getting a AWD Mustang. Nope.

Pretty wild to see a GT500 being assembled and a base 4 cyl mazda being built just behind it.

Hehe.

Its called "necro-ing" a post.

Because necromancers resurrect dead things back to life! If there were such a thing.

It's just funny to see people's ideas of the future back then, and the reality coming to life now.
