Do you belong to triple A?
So thinking of joining AAA. Are any of you members and is it worth the cost? What kind of service can one expect as a member and what benefits have you been able to get?

Depends on what level membership you get. I get roadside assistance and towing with mine.
Which helps when the state of Florida issues you a work truck with only one key that's missing the tool needed to lower the spare tire...

I think it's worth the cost. For me it's $100/yearly and it covers free roadside assistance and free towing up to 100 miles.

I recently bought a used car that would not start, so I called AAA to flatbed it home for me. It was about 75 miles away from home. I tried a local flatbed that wanted
$ 325.00 to haul it home. AAA did not cost me a dime only turnpike tolls. So it has paid for itself for a couple of years. I have the AAA plus which tows up to 100 miles. |

We have AAA plus as well. Since I have older vehicles it comes in handy. Had to have my jetta towed home once and then our Suburban, back when we had one, flatbed home as well. Now that I got a daughter getting ready to go off to college, it will be handy for her as well incase I can't get to where she might be at the time, if she ever has vehicle issues.

ROAD COURSE JUNKIE

I have it. $75 a year and get 200 mile tows. You can save on all kinds of stuff like buying cars, hotels, motels, food, roadside service for any car you are in or even help a friend or family member, fuel if you run out, lock smith service, flat tire, dead battery, etc.
If you use it enough it pays for itself.

We got it so we could take advantage of a discount on a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, by purchasing it and using the discount we saved enough to cover the cost of membership 3X's over. We try to remember to use it whenever we can, it hasn't become second nature to ask if the place we are at takes it.

Commits weekly crime
|
I always picked up paper maps too back in the day I had my AAA card.
I don't have it anymore because I currently have OnStar, which will tow you to the dealership. My Audi has AudiCare, so I'm covered fully by them too. AAA is a pretty good deal though.

AAA kicks butt for the above mentioned reasons, in addition to the fact that, at least in CA, they can perform annual registration paperwork for you. Instead of spending time at the DMV (sometimes a three hour wait WITH an appointment... and I have spent up to SIX hours standing in line before being told, "Darn... the clock ran out. Come back tomorrow!" Truly a nightmare.), the AAA office will take my registration paperwork, my check, and hand me a new sticker, right there. Been in an out of AAA office for registration in under three minutes, AND never had to speak with the dull DMV vegetables.
You can use it just by being with whoever needs a hand. Say some stranger at WalMart has locked their keys in the car, and you are feeling charitable: You can call AAA, they'll send a guy out to open the car, as long as you are present. They won't even ask if you KNOW the hot chick, they only need to see your card. Or, hanging with your friend who drives the piece of crap '96 Saturn with the bald tires and the bad battery. You stumble out of O'Perkin's Bar and Suds, and can't get the thing started. AAA will jump it, just because you are there, even if you are passed out in the back seat. You only need to be present, with your card. So, yeah... AAA is pretty cool. |

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I will look into it further and become a member. Kids are heading off to college so it might be worth having just for them or do I actually have to be there to use it?

Well I have been a member of AAA for 18 years. I have the premier card. They tow my vehicle up to 200 miles I pay nothing. Put me in a motel for 3 nights I pay nothing. Discounts on a lot of stuff. My 4 siblings and 2 of their wives plus 2 grand children all get AAA for a gift for X-Mas. For this I have a saying I bought you AAA so you don't have to call me all the time I'm not in the towing or garage business. If you don't want to use it tell me & I will stop buying it for you one less present to buy. I know some will think this is harsh but that is me.
