engine suddenly smoking BAD

well had a bad oil leak from damper so we pulled the orig 55000 mile engine and installed a new oil pump with shaft, screen, oil pan gaskets and damper cover and seal no more leaks drive way dry as a bone.

now all of a sudden she's smoking like a train... im going to try to replace the valve stem seals as im sure there brittle and should have thought of it when we had the engine out but its not a hard fix.

im really really hoping its not the rings, IF SO ill pull it and install a new GM 350 crate motor jegs has for 1570.00 with 3 year 1000,000 mile warranty,

thoughts on what the leak might be? im HOPING ITS FROM THE VALVE STEM SEALS

Sounds like increased oil pressure / volume from the new pump might be flooding the top end with more oil than before causing It to suck through the valve seals. That is the only thing I can think of. Good luck, old cars are fun, you never run out of things to do.

Also check the oil return holes in the heads, they may be plugged.

will do on both im praying its not the rings, was running perfect after we resealed it, installed new oil pan pump ,,,but that would explain the increase oil psi but the pump was a factory type not high vol or psi, but it was new melling pump, will pull valve covers and install new valve seals anyway as well as check oil return holes and pray it stops

It shouldn't be the rings, you didn't do anything that should have an effect on them. I think you will find the problem on the top end.

Did the smoke start immediately after starting it up the first time?

Another question assuming the smoke is coming from the exhaust. What color is the smoke?

Just saw this. I'm an old-car guy. Crankcase pressure might do it too.

Interested to see what you find.

I'd recommend not buying the crate engine actually. I'd recommend that you rebuild your engine. If it's a small block Chevy you can do it easily, and once you're done, you'll know it was done right. Building my own classic car engine was the best thing I ever did for my old car. There was no longer any engine repair I would not tackle on the spot, including removal of the crank for inspection.
