160 thermostat upgrade worth it?

Have been thinking about changing my stock thermostat or for a 160 one. Right now my car doesn't run hot. I have a 3600 stall, a trans cooler, and full bolt ons on E85, with 3.91 gears as well. I do like to drive my car hard sometimes and I see the temp rise a little bit, but nothing to worry about. If I change or the thermostat would that hurt or help my car? Would a retune need to be made? I've heard some people even say it adds power. Not sure if that's completely true.

Search a little and you will find that you will NOT get a definitive answer to this question........It seems to be one of the great mysteries of the automotive performance world. Adding power, no...possible cooling effects, who really knows. If your temps are bothering you, I would opt for an upgraded radiator.

In warmer climates we usually say it's good for cheap insurance to keep your temps down but it's not really going to change much.

I was thinking the same. I see up and down reviews from people saying it's worth it and other saying it's not and the stock one is the best. As for the upgrading the radiator I can't find one that will fit with my vararam intake. I'm also planing on changing the radiator hoses out for mishimoto silicone hoses

He said hoses are fine. Their thermostat would be a perfect in between. I might go with the slp 160

As far as mishimoto, they have been excellent with customer service. I can personally vouch for their speedy response when I had an issue with their oil cooler (I have an FI setup).

The lower temp tstat will open sooner sure, but once the engine gets hot, it's hot -- when ambient temps are warmer. When ambient temps are cooler (< say 70), you'll see engine coolant temps get closer to the tstat rating. In the 50s, I've occasionally scene engine coolant temps 168-170 on the freeway. I have an SLP 160...

That's interesting because phastek performance told me it wouldn't. That would be awesome if it does then I could do everything at once

I was thinking about the slp 160 but thought it would be too much of a change from the stock one and could throw a code? But I might end up going that route. My cousin told me that at his shop whenever they install mishimoto parts the customer always comes back and they have to replace it or fix something. I've never had a bad experience with their customer service. They answered my question about the oil cooler fast. I'll get the radiator hoses from them for sure.
