what is red jewel tintcoat?

Can anyone explain to me what this paint is, aside from being a slightly darker shade of red. Is there additional processing or prep that makes it more expensive?

I would call it a deeper, darker more metallic red.

basically it is a three stage paint job. You spray a base color, a tint coat and then clear. The tint coat is basically a clear or basecoat clear with a little color, but it still shows the first coat color through, it will be darker the more coats you put on and a bit harder to paint even, these reasons are why it costs more.

That makes sence, that is basically how we used to paint our R/C car bodies back in the day only in reverse.

thanks.

any idea why they don't simply mix the color in the can and eliminate the middle stage and associated price?

They cant. The "tint coat" is basically a second metallic layer. If they got rid of that then it wouldnt be a tint coat and just another metallic paint job. I highly suggest you go look at a new Malibu with the same color. Its down right amazing.

The paint will come out just fine, dont worry. We use a non spraying paint application now. Electrically bonded.

My 68 CAMARO ( look left) has a tint coat, a tri stage paint process. It has been explained in this thead. I will add that it is more expensive and also trickier to match the process on any paint repairs.

thanks for the replies. One last question.... is it a real beeotch to match touch-up paint for the inevitable rock chips, minor scratches and whatnot?

Here are a few photo's of my 2006 Corvette, the color is called Monterey Red but on my build sheet it's actually identified as Jewel Red Tintcoat

In the shade it has a darker more maroon look, more moody.

In the sun it's what I would call a Candy Apple Red. It glows.

Notice how the sun highlights the lines of the car

It was a $750 option on my 2006 vette. We are getting a deal at $295

Just for fun here's what the matching interior pieces look like
