About lighting

I have a general question about lighting. I took a center brake light bulb out of my 1996 Mazda MPV and wanted to replace it since it no longer works. The bulb happens to be a P21W 12V Stanley, apparently with a 1156 base with one single connector right on the middle on the base of the bulb. I went to Pep Boys and going to head over to AutoZone, but they only supply the 27W 12V 1156 bulb which looks like the original one. Would this bulb work for the brake light? Not sure if it is okay for a higher wattage tolerance bulb (27W) to work with a light that only requires 21W
