Disappearing Car Door

Yeah, I definitely want to put these on my Camaro.

Watch the video, then look at the site.

www.disappearing-car-door.com

The only part I don't understand....

From the slide-show.
"Access to occupants and/or their escape greatly increased in serious crash situations"

Must be some safety feature they don't mention, cause to me it seems it would be MORE difficult.

But beyond that, it would look AMAZING.

Yeah, because that will never malfunction and trap you in the car.

Just what I was thinking. moreso - like Zyreal was getting at - if you get in a crash, I'd say you're screwed...

I can imagine if it's pouring rain. Seems like they'd be soaked inside and out.

Well considering that it runs on a set of tracks, I'd say it is greatly increased.

If the panel was bent at all, I imagine it would fall out of the vehicle. I also imagine there is some sort of emergency release.

What I dont like is that it folds under the vehicle, so... take a speed bump too hard and ding that bottom cover? Then the door won't fit anymore.

Pretty cool. I love those Mark VIII's as well....they are sweet rides.

Anyway, nice idea...would have to see some more real world application on them though (like on my Silverado...lol).

Could you see opening that in the rain?.. literally the entire car wet inside.

Can you imagine the car on a rainy day? You'd have a soaking wet interior.

I really like the idea of it. I was thinking of doing something similar when I first got my eclipse. I wanted minivan-esque doors. Same concept, install a track/rails, hit a button and the door slides out slightly and back. Easy in and out. My car is always garaged/covered at work and by the time I get a camaro, I'll have a garage spot at my home. These would be a great modification, especailly for a show car. =P

It's loud and does not look good on the inside when in the up position... I’d like to see side impact crash data. Looks cool but don’t think it’s safe…

In case of accidents it probably has a fail safe mechanism

This doesn't look too bad. Just means no speakers in the door. Tweeters on the dash, rears in the back seat area and some subs in the trunk.

I was actually thinking about it today, and if they made it slot into place at the top of the track (closed) and in an accident it crumpled out (easy enough to do with strategic weak points), it would literally pop off in an accident, which I can see why that would be beneficial.

As for the look inside, these are all more proof of concept cars, where it's low-cost just to show it's able. I'm sure you could still get speakers and such in the door, as well as the noise being cut down a LOT in production.

As for rain...I'm in Cali, it hardly ever rains enough here to make interior wetting an issue, and I'd want my Camaro covered most of the time anyway.
