Catch can filling up fast
I've recently installed new Holley valve covers on my LS3. The motor is cammed with a Maggie with full supporting bolt-ons and 660rwhp. On first drive I noticed I was getting a lot of white smoke. I pulled the air intake tube and saw a lot of fresh oil pooled at the bottom of the throttle body. (Prior to me changing valve covers I never had an issue).
I picked up a new Elite Catch can and installed it on the drivers side. The intake hose is attached from the back of the drivers side valve cover to the elbow on top of the can and the outlet is attached to the drivers side of the supercharger inlet per the instructions. I've driven the car twice since the can install for a total of about 60 miles. Each time a huge cloud of white smoke fills the area on cold start-ups. I was told that it might take a while for the oil to get out of the system. After tonight's trip I let the motor cool down and again pulled the air intake tube and the throttle body still had pooled oil in it. I opened the catch can and it was FULL!! What gives? Is this normal? If not what are my solutions? Please help, thanks. Last edited by gnturboray; 05-12-2015 at 05:07 AM. |

Sounds like those new Holley valve covers do not have an effective baffle installed in the area of the port and oil is being vacuumed from the valve cover port into the catch can and then into the supercharger. Pull the drivers side valve cover and compare the baffle, if one is installed, to the stock valve cover.

may sound stupid but when you installed your valve cover did you remove the hoses and maybe swapped em around with your catch can? installing em backwards will cause pressure surges and in turn blow oil right out.

The catch can was installed after the new valve covers and I followed the directions from Elite and confirmed my hose routing via Camaro 5.

The problem is the Holley valve covers. They have a poor baffling system. I suggest going back to the OEM valve covers. I've seen this time and time again.

I second that! Infact, we had so much excessive blow by on a 1LE it from those valve covers it was starting to get outta control.. Check how your carch can is piped in as well..

Thx guys, I took the car into 21st Century Muscle Cars this morning and they confirmed that it was indeed the Holley valve covers.

Holley valve covers
I have the same covers and that happened to me on the first start up. Read on the instructions that you must put an inline PCV valve on since the stock covers already have it integrated. The instructions should tell you what they recommend. It is an inexpensive FRAM inline filter that you must install. No biggie. I have done this and absolutely no issues afterwards.
