It was probably because the onstar module hadn't booted up yet or something ridiculous like that.

What's the big hurry? These cars, all late model cars really, are controlled by computers (your ECU). Upon ignition, the ECU runs a quick check on all the "systems" on the car. On start up, you need to give it 10-15 seconds to run these checks before you start driving it.
