2014 getting the new LT1? - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

The LT1 V8 (Direct Injection) is coming out in the new Corvette next year and a version will be also be in GMs all new full size trucks/SUVs for the 2014 MY. So how can GM keep making the LS3/L99 just for the Camaro for another couple of years? It doesn't make sense ($) that next year's Camaro (SS,LE1) doesn't get the newest V8 also. Corvette insiders say higher hp V8 versions & a convertible will follow in the next year or so. Maybe GM keeps building the LS9's for a few more years just for the ZL1's until a replacement is built on the new LT1?

I was reading in a Corvette forum, that 5 (covered) C7 Covettes and a team of engineers with their own fuel truck were seen doing high altitude testing for a week in New Mexico. What caught my attention was that the team also had 5 Camaros.

The general usually releases all the cool new Vette toys on other models/trucks the following model year in most cases. That's also what they have done for special models and the convertibles as well. C6 came out in 05, Z06 came out in 06. I would assume they have another LTsomething up their sleave for the Z06/ZL1 model. Should be pretty epic! So I would guess the SS will see it in 2015 but then again the sixth gen Camaro might be out at the same time. Same thing for the trucks, I would think they have a whole slew of new engines in the works to top Hemi's 5.0s and ecoboost motors but again....the truck platform is due for an update too.

It definitely won't be in the 5th gen. Probably the 6th though.

I just don't think the Gen6 Camaro will be here before 2016... at least. Ford didn't wait for a new model to install their newest powerplant. GM could do some easy tweaks (LED taillights, revised grill / bumper fascia?) and drop their newest engine in that would keep the Camaro competitive (450 hp auto?). Ford has already said the New Mustang will be a 2015... GM has not committed to a replacement model year... and since the current car is selling well and is only 4 years old a new improved V8 could extend it's competitive appeal another 2-3 years. Besides, they already have the engine.... why wait?

They already said 2015 for the 6th gen Camaros?

I wouldn't be suprised to see the new LT1 in the current 5th gen, but then again I wouldn't doubt if it waits until the 6th gen arrives...I guess I'm on the fence here.

But I think the OP has a point. Putting that powerplant in the current car would definitely help keep its sales alive...and I think Chevy is going to need the help when the new Mustang comes out.

Then again, if the 2014 Corvette gets the engine first, and the Camaro won't until the next model year, that puts it in the 2015. Does it make sense to put it in the last year of this gen? Maybe so, maybe not. I'm thinking the 6th gen will hit for sure for the 2016 model year, if not the 2015. I think past the 2016 model year is waiting too long.

My guess is if they do release the lt1 in the 5th gen, it would be a special package like the lte.
While I am for progress, don't they risk alienating customers by releasing too much too soon? It's getting to the point you don't want to commit because it will be outdated in a model year. That's fine for smaller ticket items like electronics, because if it's important enough to you, you can upgrade without a huge financial impact. But with cars that are already expensive for many , a slower pace would be nice. There are other benefits to this as well. At least it seems to me that the longer a customer is happy with their current product, the more brand loyalty is fostered. A huge upgrade like a next gen engine available only one year after I took the plunge would upset me. Why? Because I'd feel like a sucker for not waiting. I know a 6th gen is coming and I chose not to wait for that, but it was a choice. I would have chosen to wait, and preferred a 5th gen with the next generation power plant.

My bad... most all searches I found show the Camaro redesign being the fall of 2015 (2016 MY). I just didn't think GM would wait 2 years after releasing the new LT1 to finally put it in the Camaro. The lastest Mustang re-fresh and their new higher output engines have pulled Mustang sales up to the point they may soon pass Chevy. I guess I thought GM would do the same trick of re-freshing and using their newest engine for the last 2 model years too..... but I guess there is always rebates?

Who knows. Maybe the new engines will make into the last year of the gen5 and they could drop the SS and make it a Z28 as a special send off to the Gen5.

I think we will see the LT1 in the 5th gen. The 6th gen will most likely come out in late 2014 early 2015 as a 2016 model. That leaves 2 more model years for the 5th gen that could be powered by the new motor.

You will not see the new LT1 in the 2014 Camaro.
It will be a Corvette only engine at least for the first year.

Same as it was for the last LT1 engine (Corvette in 1992, Camaro in 1993)
And the LS1 engine (Corvette in 1997, Camaro in 1998)

Entirely possible you will see this engine in the 2015 Camaro.
Will just have to wait and see.

Considering how early the 2014 Vette hits (1st quarter 2013), I wouldn't be surprised if there is a "mid-year" engine change on the 2014 Camaro... giving GM some on road time before turning up the tune for the 2016 redesign.

Wasn't there an engine change on the last year of the 3rd Gen Z-28?

Honestly depends on when they shut down, and switch over the lines that make the current engines to start making new Gen V. My guess is it will be closely tied to the release of the new trucks...as that is really what the Gen V engine is all about. Remember when it comes to V8's at GM...the trucks fund and lead everything and V8's in cars are just a fun side thing.
