Why not feed him a full blown rat instead of several smaller feeder mice?

I tried that... gave him a small rat, not very much bigger than the mice. Not sure why, but he wouldn't take it. Struck at it many times, but either couldn't grasp the thing, or was simply striking as a defensive measure. In any case, he wouldn't take it.

On another note, he IS serving a noble purpose: I had some friends over for a BBQ the other day, and they brought a gaggle of kids. The kids were pretty nervous and apprehensive about the snake, but also very intrigued. They wanted to see it... then pet it... and eventually, they all held the snake. One of my personal rules, that I will NEVER break, is that I will never "scare" a person with a snake. People tend to be skittish enough about them, and to reinforce the fear by doing something as lame and unfunny as scaring people with snakes serves no purpose. Anyhow, by the end of the afternoon, because this King is so docile and comfortable being held (and because nobody played the stupid, "scary snake" stuff), these kids were all able to overcome their fear of snakes. The kids felt very proud of themselves, and maybe someday, instead of taking a shovel to one of these, they'll pick it up and teach another kid that snakes are pretty cool!
