Is DIC oil temp accurate in 2015 1LE?

Yesterday i did a pretty hard run through the mountains near me. 45 - 50 minutes one way.

I noticed that the oil temp on the DIC was 2 ticks below max, high 250's, and was right on the edge of what I guess is the safe zone as is marked in the DIC. Pic for example. (not from my car)

The gauge on my 4 pack looked ok.

I did some reading here in the forums and I found countless posts saying that these gauges don't actually monitor temp, and that the feedback is based on several variables. Is that an accurate statement? Most of the posts I found about this were 2012-2013. I didn't find much at all about the 2015 so I don't know if this is the same or not.

Are these gauges reliable, or are you guys running aftermarket gauges?

Thanks in advance.

Are you saying that the oil temp in the 4 pack gauge didn't match that in the DIC? Mine has always aligned perfectly. I make no argument for how accurate they are, only that they match.

I'm guessing he means the high line at the 4-pack gauge was not reached.

The gauge is somewhat accurate for the regular operating range for a bone-stock engine, and gets less accurate as the temps climb and as you mod the car (and so the calculation gets off).

250s are not dangerous by the way. It should be perfectly OK until you hit (real) 280s, but the fake gauge might show much more than that when it's really, say, 280.

A Really good engine builder mostly circle track small blocks says he makes the most horsepower with 250deg oil.

20-30 min HPDE sessions at @ 70 degrees, I'm running in the 250's. Doubt you're running your car that hard on public roads, but like other's have said, 250 is not high, especially for a good synthetic oil.

No it was close. I was just curious because the DIC shows a normal zone, and it was right on the edge of going over it, while the cluster gauge doesn't display like that.

Food for thought.

Special Thanks to wernergmhtp for providing that.

Usually when the car hits 235 I try to calm down on the revving and try to shift on low revs so the temps lowers to 230 at least. But in regards to your question yes for me at least it seems pretty accurate. I have headers, and an intake in the car and it seems to be accurate all thru the process.

I subscribe to motorsports magazine and they are doing a 5th gen project car. During testing they noticed that the oil temps were getting way too high and were planning to add an additional or larger oil cooler. Turns out under further investigation that the oil temperature gauge does not have a sensor sitting in the oil. Turns out Chevy decided to use the computer to estimate oil temperature based on driving conditions and out side temperatures. When they approached Chevy they admitted that the computer is accurate 95% of the time. You guessed it, the 5% when it's not accurate is when your racing the car! So when you really need to rely on the oil temperature gauge it turns out it's inaccurate. Chevy stated that the computer will register the oil hotter than it really is while racing. So as you could expect, Motorsports magazine installed a proper gauge.
