$1100 for four snow tires. Is there a better deal somewhere else?

So I knew that when I took delivery of my 2LT/RS back in May that I would love my car, despite the fact that is highly impractical, particularly since it's my only vehicle. Living in Michigan, I realize that snow tires on my Camaro are imperative, so I'm starting to look around now.

Question: Will snow tires make much more of a difference than less-expensive all-season tires?

I got a quote for Belle Tire for 4 Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow tires for my 20" wheels, with each tire being $250 (includes the special order/delivery charge). Adding in the mounting fee and taxes, and I'm looking at a total of $1139. A web search show that it a good price, but I'm wondering if there are better options out there.

I only have room for one car in my garage, and while I considered buying a used 4x4, I'd rather not have to deal with another vehicle.

$1139? Mine was $1123. They also told me they would mount and remount the tires for me complimentary. This was in Lansing though.

This was the best deal I could get by having true snow tires.

By the way, I also found out that these scorpions are also high speed rated.

I'm quite happy with these tires, and to have winter tires that feel almost exactly like the summer ones when driving on dry pavement I thought could not be beat.

Go with smaller diameter tires and steelies. Youll save over the years wear and tear and remounting costs. And also if something happens smashing a steel wheel is no biggie.

If you go to a smaller rim i.e. 18 in and a higher profile tire the prices are better, a decent tire shop will work out the tire size for you, or look it up on line. It won't be the same size you have now and your speedo may be out, so stay with the traffic flow.

You want a higher thinner tire in the snow. The more buffering of the car to the snow the better. I had 2 different suspensions for my STi including rims and tires and it made a hell of a difference from summer to winter.

If you can afford just over $1500 looking into a set of 18" snow tires and rims from tirerack.com. Up front cost is a bit more but in the long run you can swap the tires yourself if you want or come spring and fall just spend a bit and have a shop do it. Much less stress on the tires from being stretched each time.

Tire Rack or

Discount Tire (tires.com)

They sell winter rims cheap, mount and balance them, and ship them to your door ready to bolt on.

Like they said. get a smaller rim so that you get a larger sidewall - keeps your rim further from the potholes/ice chunks, provides more give in the tire and the tires will be WAY cheaper.

I wish they'd gone with 18" or 19" anyway, with a lower profile at least on the SS, and maybe made the wheelwells a bit smaller. Not a big thing, just a preference.
