Oil change for ZL1
Hi guys,
I recently bought a 2013 zl1 vert. I took it to get the first oil change at the dealership. I asked for synthetic and they gave me semi-synthetic. Is this ok? I asked the service guy if that is ok since I was under the impression that it took synthetic. He said the car is made to take the semi-synthetic. Thanks! |

This car does not actually call for full syn. It is a 50/50 blend. I myself after the first two oil changes switched to full syn.

IIRC my 2011 SS had Mobil 1 embossed right on the oil filler cap.
My 2013 ZL1 and my 2015 Malibu just require Dexros which is semi synthetic . I had quite the discussion with the service dept manager when I took the Malibu in for it's first oil change. I initially was going to go with Mobil 1. We argued back and forth, and he finally said he'd gladly take my money, but GM only asks for Dexros. I decided to settle on Dexros for the Malibu. For the ZL1, I always ask for Mobil 1 even though it doesn't need it, Deros would be fine. |

Just for clarity's sake, as this discussion has been on this and just about every high performance GM board, Dexos is an oil specification developed by GM. A lot of oils meet Dexos specification, including 5w-30 Mobil 1. GM calls for any Dexos certified oil (some are synthetic bends and many are full synthetics). The dealer will likely put the ACDelco Blend in as the house oil if they are not paid to use Mobil 1. People sometimes call that oil Dexos, because the Dexos logo is more prominent than on other oils. Interestingly enough, GM calls for Mobil 1 for track duty on the Corvettes and Z/28, but not for the Zl1. So, in theory, you should have full warranty coverage with any Dexos certified oil. The full list is at: http://www.centerforqa.com/gm/dexos2-brands |

The bottom line is that GM only spec's a 'Dexos' type of oil, which is a semi-synthetic oil for both my Malibu and ZL1. The oil caps on both have Dexos on them, not the Mobil 1 label that my 2011 SS had. Mobil 1 is fine, just not required. |

Just had the dealer do my first FREE oil change at 1500 miles. They used Mobil 1 ,GM approves it for the free first 2 year changes. You can do twice a year. Even though my filler cap says Dexos

I just had the dealer do my first free oil change, they put in Mobil 1 at my request. I told them I could pay the price difference from Dexos but they didn't charge me.

Some say it's better to use semi-synth for the first 10k or so.

Gm did a service update for the oil requirements on the Zl1, and they change it from requiring full synthetic to a semi synthetic to save money, because most dealers agreed to a 2 yr free oil change. When I went in for my last oil change I was shocked to see them try to pass of semi syn on me. Then they should me a piece of paper that listed the requirements for the Zl1, and if you look closely you could see it was an update (meaning they modified it from the original requirements. (they ended up giving me full synthetic).
