Wait or buy now

Hey guys, I got some money back for my totaled car. I'm in a dilemma, used cars (zl1 is what im looking for)are almost as much as new cars but new cars are slightly out of my budget. Should I bite the bullet and just get a used one now, or try to wait a month or two when the market "supposidly" dumps and prices drop, and buy a beater in the meantime? I'm finding zl1's for $61-65k, but you can build a brand new loaded zl1 for $68k, or there's some on lots.

I would put an order in and save some extra cash in the meantime. Who knows when you’d actually take delivery of a 23 so you have some time to really cut down on that price. I wouldn’t count on anything happening soon because these economists have proven to be wrong time and time again. Whatever you do don’t pay any kind of markup. Call a bunch of dealerships and get some answers out of them as far as Camaros sold or allocation situation. This will help you narrow down the list of dealerships you should work with and the ones you should avoid.

Ordering a car is your best bet to ensure you’d be only paying MSRP, also allows you to build the car the way you want. Also would allow you to save the monthly payment amount towards your down payment. Only thing with ordering is the wait of it coming in. I wouldn’t buy used because of the prices, but just about all new dealer lot cars are marked up at least $3k or more. Many are also selling before they get to the dealers lot.

Buying a beater will probably just eat all the potential savings from waiting... It's so unstable that you don't know what will happen next. I bet performance cars will stay where they are, despite high gas prices - V8 enthusiasts won't jump on EV/hybrid wagon. I would be hesitant to rush on "regular/boring/commuter" cars only.
I was looking for a car year ago and had the same dilema C6 Z06 vs new 2SS - well, new won, but then I thought "ZL1 isn't THAT MUCH more, and I can spare some shackles, so I can experience SC for the last time".

FYI, 2023 ZL1s increased $3,900. $3,700 on the car, $200 on the delivery charge.

If you can find a 2021/2022 at MSRP then snag it. Otherwise, you can expect to be over $70k for a new one without any options once you factor in any options, gas guzzler tax, dealer fees, etc.

This new MSRP pricing will also drive up the price of used Camaros. Low supply coupled with the fact that the Camaro days are numbered is also driving up the cost.

Where did you hear that these crazy market prices are going to come down in 1-2 months?

Oh damn alright. I found quite a few 2022's that are already sitting on lots under 70k. I kind of agree with the beater idea, everyone says to do that, but I'm gonna take a hit when I sell the beater for a new car anyways. I heard from a couple dealers that prices are coming down, so they pushing sales hard right now for used cars. But who knows, it's only 2 people, could just be blowing smoke /shrug

Be wary of the advertised price vs. reality. Depending on your market some of these ZL1s are 10-15k over MSRP. Some dealers will sell at MSRP, many will price gauge, etc.

This is what used looks like in Florida at the moment.

They'd be the last people I'd believe.

All though I do see on AutoTrader on many vehicles right now "Price Reduced". So maybe there is some truth to it. If dealers gave high trade values and now prices are coming down, they for sure would want to dump them now. Personally unless I needed a car, I wouldn't buy anything right now. If I needed a car, I'd buy one from a private party that isn't trying to make a mint.

If you can find 2022 at msrp i would grab it. If 22s on the lots over sticker close to 70k I would order 23

I have 23 ss on order but constantly looking for new 22 because msrp gone up. Why not save 2k, it's the same new car

I thought you would probably buy that Krypton Green SS at Karl Chevrolet. It was a near match to your car.

I would buy a new ZL1 if you can find what you want on the 2022 models. I’m glad I found my slightly used(425 miles) 2017 ZL1 back in early 2019 before this crazy market time came along. The ZL1 was built with basically the same options I would have ordered which was a win-win for me. Good luck!

If you plan on any type of mods that require tuning, your going to want to find a 2018 or older. My tuner basically told me he isn't able to tune the 19 and up as HP tuners hasn't had great success with unlocking the ecus consistently. Theres about a 33% success rate and if yours is one that gets broken, good luck buying an ecu with the shortages the way they have been.
