It all depends on how you are driving I guess. If you are going in a straight line and want to go fast, just leave it in S so you don't have to focus on shifting, but if you are going in and out of traffic or around corners, you then want to use paddle shifters. Good gas mileage or in the city shift at 2000 to 3000. I have yet to find the sweet spot for the best shift point.

Considering you can easily hit 90mph in 3rd gear (2SS automatic) , everything after that is just fuel savings.

I use paddle shifters as my primary driving mode. When I'm cruising in 6th gear at 70mph, and want to kick the car into its powerband and scream down the road, I have to drop it to 3rd.

Noob question. Can you over-rev the engine downshifting with paddle-shift like you can with a standard manual? Or is it programmed to protect the engine and not shift if it knows by downshifting you will damage the motor?

I am pretty sure it won't let it downshift if it will overrev the motor. It will come up in the DIC "Shift Denied" same as if you are going to slow to up shift.

Oh ok because that's one thing that scares me about the paddleshifters, as I am scared I will bump them by accident, whereas I do not have that worry on a traditional manual.

hitting the upshift/downshift button while in D does nothing, they only work while in manual mode

I know that, I mean say I am in 2nd going 40 and I accidentally hit the downshift paddle with my hand while cornering, will it shift into 1st and drop a valve or something?

Nope. Like AngryBird said, it will display "shift denied" on the DIC.

if you try shifting into a gear too low or too high that will hurt the engine you will get a message in your DIC saying "shift denied"

You can use them when in "D". Ive used them to downshift to pass before. But in "D" if you dont use them for a certain amt of time, it will go back to regular "D" mode.

Actually in 2010 it didn't but the 2012 will shift manually in D for a short time then it returns to D depending on the engine loading. I don't know about the 2011 though.

Don't worry, it happened to me a few times at low speed city driving and the DIC will prevent engine damages. It might downshift up to a certain RPM but your protected. If going too slow it won't accept the upshift to a certain speed.

I have tried that a few times. It has never worked for me. I believe when you are in D, the paddles are not active. Not saying you are wrong. Just it doesn't work for me.
