MERGED: If I put down a $1K deposit, what would happen if GM goes bankrupt?

Would they refund the money? Or would they still make my car?

My dealer told me that my deposit was just so I wouldn't run off to another dealer and that if there was a good enough reason i could my money back no problem..... I'd talk to your dealer about it.... GM shouldn't be going bankrupt until next year and they most likely WON'T because you know they are going to get help from the government

Your deposit isnt with GM. It is with the independent dealer. So if the dealer is still in business then your money is safe. But if the dealer goes down with GM (which is likely) then you need to get in line with the rest of the creditors.

Side Bar: GM isnt going anywhere. They are too big of a staple of our economy for the government to let fold.

Too bad the Chevy dealership isn't like the BMW dealership I dealt with. They didn't even deposit my check until the car came in.

GM is GM, a dealer is a dealer.

You need to worry if your dealer goes out of business. If your dealer is doing good and GM goes under, you can still get your refund from the dealer.

Well that would be up to the individual dealer. GM does not have you deposit money. I privately owned dealertip does.

Bankruptcy doesn't mean out of business.

Mods, we're going to need to do some merging.

I recommend merging this thread with all the following: this thread, this thread, this thread, and this thread.

If you have a deposit with your local Chevy dealer and Tomorrow morning you go in to have a look around and signs up say; Closed Indefinitely, you have indefinitely lost your cash.

Merging 5 threads may get confusing.

But, I'll do it if no one has a problem with it.

5 is way too many.

You could probably merge a couple of them. It was just an idea.
