I went to the dealership to have both belts replaced today. drove of the lot and about a mile down the road the main belt comes off. First, the battery light comes on then i notice the power steering is out so i turn around. finally the engine starts to bog down, over heating warnings come. i pull the car over and shut the engine off but before that i noticed some grey smoke out the exhaust.

I only drove the car about 2 miles with the belt missing, is that enough to do damage to the engine?

i have 39k miles and change my oil regularly with full synthenic. Car at dealship so they can change oil, replace belt and give a good look over, but I don't know if the grey smoke was true engine damage or just from over heating.

The crank pulley simply presses on to the crank until it stops against a shoulder. The torque spec on the crank bolt is so high there's really almost no possible way that the crank pulley isn't on all the way in every car.

I just got my 2011 SS and it did the same thing described in this thread. I just replaced the belt last night and the only way I got it on was using a zip tie. I fought that stupid tool with no luck. I bought the gates belt and can't drive it today due to ice on the roads.

I really hope this problem doesn't happen again but I fear it will. I wonder if the compressor pulley could be shimmed?

I just had my SS in the shop for the 3rd time in 3 years for the belt problem. (Same as the OP, belt was walking up the crank pulley and fraying)

After 2 replaced belts I finally insisted that the cause was not "a bad belt"

They checked more thoroughly and found that the Crank pulley was adjusted improperly.

Praying that's the end of my belt saga. My warranty runs out 3/7/14

The AC belt in my car did the same thing last year. I cut it off to get rid of the annoying squeal. My car is not a daily driver, so I don't mind driving it without the belt for now (maybe I even gained a few horsepower ) I will get another belt for it one of these days.....

Having the same problem on my 2011 ss with 14,000 miles. Dealer gets it tomorrow. Hopefully it doesn't happen again!

Compressor V-Belt Improperly Tracking

My 2011 SS/RS is currently in the shop for the 4th time regarding this belt tracking issue. The car only has 13k miles and has been a problem since day one. I'm an automotive engineer and current have GM product engineering involved in this issue. They currently are working on a shim design to go between the crankshaft face and the belt pulley. I have not got an answer yet as to why the shim. The belt alway tracks towards the front of the vehicle. Is it to compensate for a crankshaft issue? That makes no sense. If the pulley is not perpendicular to the centerline of the crankshaft it would "Wobble" uncontrollably. It's tracking, not wobbling. Everything involved with the belt issue has been addressed on my vehicle with no resolutions. I will keep you posted. To all the other threads relating to putting a different belt on and it fixed your issue, it's temporary. There's an underlying mechanical issue that will eventually be addressed i'm certain.

I have new 13 SS/RS L99 with 750 miles on it. I also noticed a belt noise last week (since its hard to hear it with doors closed), and checked it out today. After inspecting the belts, I noticed the compressor belt is (off alignment). I have made an appointment to take in to dealer tomorrow. Not sure if it’s a belt issue or pulley? I hope they find a fix soon..

I put a brand new AC belt on a few days ago because mine was splitting down the center. Was working fine, but all of a sudden stopped. I checked the belt and it was gone. Finally saw it hanging down off the back of the harmonic balancer. Looks like the belt took took the compressor plug with it. Hoping I don't have to replace the entire compressor.

That sucks! Must be a pulley issue, and or bad belts. My camaro is still in the shop going on 3 days. dealer is swamped with work, they’re gonna install new belt and pulley. Hope that completes the issue, will post outcome when i get it back tomm.

So after 3.5 days at the dealer, got the camaro back, and NO belt noise at all.
2 belts were replaced and the crankshaft pulley. It was warped, possibly defective. I hope this is the last issue I have with this belt/pulley misalignment issue.

My belt was split, and now completely disappeared, I only have 7500 miles. I'm ordering a gates belt, and tool, and doing it myself.

My 2011 SS with 10,800 miles is going in Wednesday because my belt pulled forward and is half off. My warranty ends June 11th, does GM still cover the belt if it happens again or am I out of pocket the next time?

I would assume that since it's not a recall item, your on your own after this.
