T6060 Shifting Problems

I have been using Joe Gibbs oil now Called Driven Racing Oil (owned by Comp Cams) in my race engines for probably 8 to 10 years now. I owned my own Dyno for years & found that Joe Gibbs oil was developed to make Bearings, Lifters/Cams last much longer in NASCAR engines. It really does make a big difference on engine life. So when I bought my Daughter a Camaro SS with a T6060 Tremec in it. I was not very impressed with how it shifted. The car only had 10K miles on it & it felt that the synchronizers were very tight in the trans. It shifted hard when cold & got somewhat better when warmed up. Therefore, like most people I went to the forums for Camaro, Mustangs & Challengers & many people are having issues with this Trans. I wanted to get rid of the Cheap Havoline Dextron III that GM claims is a lifetime fluid on these Trans. Therefore, I called up my old buddy Lake Speed Jr. at JG/Driven Racing Oil & talked to him about their STF Synthetic Formula Synchromesh Transmission Fluid. He told me that the formula had special additives designed to solve these problems. So I swapped out the ATF for 4 Quarts of the Driven STF & took it for a drive. Totality different. I was amazed at how much a difference it made in smoothing out the shifts. I believe that it will continue to improve as I drive the car. I only drove it for about 5 Miles, but you could tell that it now had a superior lube in the trans. The only drawback which I think is small is this stuff is not easy to find. You can purchase it directly from Driven or I bought mine from JDP Motorsports in Utah. It does cost almost $20 a quart. I think it is well worth it.
Here is the Data:

  • STF Synthetic Formula Synchromesh Transmission Fluid protects gears, bearings and internal clutches in extreme heat environments. By reducing friction, heat and wear, it improves shifting characteristics and lowers operating temperatures. Exceeds performance requirements for GM, Chrysler, Honda and Mini Cooper synchronized transmissions. STF features advanced synthetic base stocks, multifunctional performance additives, corrosion inhibitors and a foam suppressor to provide excellent synchronizer performance and compatibility with yellow metals found in manual transaxles and transmissions. Recommended for manual transmissions that require automatic transmission fluids, multi-viscosity or straight grade motor oils.

  • Smooth, Consistent Shifting Action
  • High Temp High Shear Protection
  • Protects Synchronizers From Wear
  • Resists Heat, Oxidation & Varnish

I drove the car a second time. Even cold the Trans shifts better than it did hot with the original ATF in it.

I tried amsoil since im a "dealer" and i get it super cheap and it did nothing. Ive tried every possible damn thing except tearing the tranny apart. Ill have to give this a go.

Unlike ATF for auto trans, Driven STF is made for a Trans with Synchronizers. I believe that is why it works better.

TR6060 hard shifting issues here too, especially second gear grind when cold. I have yet to change out the fluid, please keep us posted.

Pretty sure its just shitty transmission in our cars not suited for the power output, pretty upsetting because the engine is nice.

I don't hear any of this from the v6 guys.

V6 uses a different transmission. It comes with a different fluid. V8 Manual Transmission is designed for ATF, V6 Manual Transmission is designed to run gear oil. Totally different spec and viscosity.

The fluid being hyped in this thread is very over priced. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is HALF of that and still gets the job done. Seems like an unpaid advertisement if you ask me. Several less expensive alternatives that work better than the factory fill.

What non-shitty trans would you have preferred? TR6060 is pretty popular in lots of high HP applications. Some much more powerful than stock LS3.

I'll take just about anything, the 6060 is terrible.just look into the 2nd gear grind issues or cold temp shifting the thing feels broken.

I've read all about them, but never had the issue. You could always have Rockland Gear, RPM, Tick etc rebuild it with different synchros.

I have a ZF6 in my Silverado (used in Corvettes for a while) and it is way more of a beast than the 6060, but there are trade-offs that have to be made when you want at manual to handle 700HP. Not sure there are any better manuals for American cars than the 6060 since all the manufacturers are using it. In fact, I can't recall another instance where all of the Big Three were using essentially the same part for something.
