Backing Plates?

So, I'm thinking about buying a 7424XP orbital buffer, but I'm a little confused about the "backing plates". They come in different sizes, 5, 5 1/2, 6" etc.

So if the buffer is 6", what size should the backing plate be? Also, what's the purpose?

Thanks

You just need to make sure you get the correct backing plate for the pads you want to use. Don't over think it. 5.5" plate = 5.5" pads

In general you want to get a backing plate that is 1/2 inch smaller than the pads you are going to use.

What is nice about all DA polishers (the common ones at least) is that the stud for the backing plate is the same (the thread pitch/size) so you can use them interchangeably.

The backing plate performs the following actions
  • It transfers the motion of the machine (orbital and rotational movement) to the pad. A properly sized backing pad will directly transfer more movement.
  • It provides stiff support that allows the pad to be compressed for maximum effectiveness.
  • It connects the pads to the machine using a hook and loop attachment (Velcro is a brand of hook and loop) so pads can be quickly changed.

Hope this one helps the OP out.
