Hex Vents

After checking a number of posts on the Hex Vents and looking at countless photos I was sold on getting the vents for my hood.. unfortunately I don't have the "guts" to cut a hole in my hood so I decided to check the body shop for some quotes. I heard back from them today and it was a "oh no you don't want to do that". One of the reps husbands is a GM guy and was the General manager of the Chevy dealer. He told her tell him not to do it. The pans which will catch water will leak and get water on engine compartment which can lead to rust.. the hood could warp and a couple of other things. This obviously concerned me and has me SECOND GUESSING the vents. Has anyone had any experience with the vents and what's your thoughts. I haven't seen anything out there like this but after the body shops comments...

Let me hear from you

Thnx
Lee

But he lives in Hawaii

I love the way they look but the water intrusion is a huge concern. We have a Mustang in the fleet that has a very nice aftermarket functional shaker hood on it (picture early 2000s Mach one) and it has been on there for about 8 years now. The car is low mileage but when I went to change the plugs there was so much rust on the plugs and just crud in and around the intake manifold from water and crap getting in there I was bummed. I am casually looking for a factory hood to put it back to stock to avoid this in the future.

we do get rain out here :P

and i've been caught in it a few times without splash guards or engine cover now...doesn't really mess things up as much as i expected. a spray and wipe and things are good to go. however, i do try to avoid it...

regarding the warping - i could see this being an issue if you cut your holes too small and force the vents in, but if you've got them right they should drop in pretty easily. i don't see how they could cause any warping like that, and actually would be more likely to reinforce the hood, IMO. the vents themselves seem very sturdy, and i think this issue is addressed on the HPE site as well.

i know someone crafted up some vent covers for rain also...i think it was in the "what did you do to your camaro today" thread. I meant to PM him about them...if they attach somehow, i'd rather run those than splash guards

Don't get the car wet and it won't be an issue.

These cars are too nice to get water on them.

Been getting a few PM's on how to make the covers. For some reason the original Hex Vent thread that had it before is gone?

Go to Lowes or Home depot and buy a sheet of 1/8" thick diamond plate aluminum.I think it was 24"x24".The 12" x24" piece will be too small.

Use the cut outs from the Hood and add about a 1/4" all around to make a pattern and cut them out.File and sand the edges smooth.

Drill 2 holes in the covers so that the 2" x5/32nds Machine bolts pass through the Hex mesh.Use a nylock nut to attach the bolts to the covers.

Then buy 4 knurled nuts and 4 washers to attach the vents covers when needed to the vents with out the need for tools.

Get some self adhesive weather stripping about 1/8" thick and a 1/2 wide to apply to the bottom of the covers.

I got everything I needed at Lowes.Take your time and they will come out very good.

I found a couple of old pics to help as well.
