How to beat 1-4 skip shift in the M6 LS3
I know there are folks out there that do not like the ole skip shift 1-4 thing...also called CAGS. The impression I've gotten is that many think it is unavoidable. Well, the actual function is persistent but there are four ways around it:
1. The easiest, start in second gear. I don't do this one unless conditions are slick...but if you do start in second, 1-4 skip isn't an option for the ECM. 2. When the 1-4 pops up, simply direct shift from first to third. You can do that. Only second gear is blocked and the shift to third is smoother in my opinion. 3. Or, if that isn't working for you, extend your RPMs. Typically I will just keep going until the RPMs pass about 2500 or so and the 1-4 shift turns off. Then shift to second 4. Do the opposite...slow down and as the RPMs drop below like 2000 or so, the 1-4 shuts off and you shift to second. This one is handy if you don't have room due to traffic to extend your RPMs as suggested in #3 above. So, if you really dislike the skip shift 1-4 thing...there are ways around it. It is not as mandatory as you might think. Hope this helps.

Also one thing I have noticed with skip shift, since it being season in FL, if you try to jump to 2nd, like you beat skip shift to the punch and shift into 2nd and then it turns on, it still locks out 3rd. Here is when skip shift kicks on ● you are in 1st gear ● you are using 35% throttle or less ● you are traveling between 15 and 21 mph ● and your engine coolant temperature is greater than 171 F (77 C)

I will have to try a quick first to third when skip is on and see if it blocks....I've never had it block to third but maybe it is just timing out...

Why not just buy an eliminator?

I jump my gears 90% of the time I drive my car and it happens often to me. That's the only reason I know.

1st to 3rd is no problem... Normally I bring the revs up a few rpm's. and go to 2nd .. If the ship shift pops up I just go to 3rd.

Some people, like me don't care enough about it to buy one
Here it is from APEX: CAGS, or Computer-Aided Gear Selection, is a feature on 1994 and newer domestic performance vehicles equipped with a six speed manual transmission. The stated purpose of CAGS is to improve fuel economy under normal driving conditions and is activated when: ● you are in 1st gear ● you are using 35% throttle or less ● you are traveling between 15 and 21 mph ● and your engine coolant temperature is greater than 171 F (77 C) When these parameters are met, CAGS overrides the driver and locks out 2nd and 3rd gear, forcing the driver to shift directly from 1st to 4th gear. Most serious drivers are unwilling to accept this factory installed nuisance and eliminating it is priority number one. While some offer a crude do-it-yourself fix, the safest and most reliable way to eliminate CAGS is by installing a high quality Skip Shift Eliminator.

There was a thread on here a while ago in regards to avoiding the skip shift and I've used it ever since. When the skip shift alert shows, just hit the "clear" button the on the left and majority of the time for me it has worked perfectly. I just use my finger to hit the button while keeping my hands on the wheel. Some people didn't like having to look for the alert, and multi-tasking but it's pretty simple by just using your peripheral vision.

Pretty sure that trick only gets rid of the message. Probably more of the case as above where, by the time you clear the message, the cags has timed out, allowing you to shift normally. I've hit the button and was still locked out of 2nd.

Also, it takes a split second more, but if you "fake" like you're going to 4th--move the shifter over to the right--you can move it back right into 2nd.
