Ordering Question
Hello all, I have a question about ordering a new car. I've never ordered one before, had several new cars but picked them out of the show room.
I plan on ordering a 2SS. By ordering it, do I avoid the dealer markup? Is the final price set when the order is placed or can the price change between when it's ordered and when you pick it up. Also, do you take care of financing at the time of the order or after the car comes in. Finally, what can I expect to pay when all is said and done for a 2SS 6M. I'm not really looking to add any other significant options. Thanks for all your help. |

no you cannot avoid dealer markups...
the final price SHOULD be set when ordering, you should get a written order price. financing when the car shows up, i got mine a few weeks before, so i could walk in and walk out. 2ss 33.4k + TTL 36k or so.

Best thing to do is call around and tell the dealer if they are charging over MSRP for the 2SS. If they say no, go to that dealer and order. But if you're in a hurry, you may also want to ask if they have any open allocations, and when the next will be available if you purchased today.
BTW if you are going to custom order, feel free to expand your search radius a couple hundred miles away from your home because you may not get a good deal in the metro area, but you may get a better deal from a more rural, or suburban dealer.

My method...
First I did alot of homework on the car and the order process. Learned about allocations and the entire process of making its way through the event codes. Once I got all my ducks in a line I started making calls. First question I ALWAYS asked was if they would accept my order at GMS. I refuse to buy a GM car without GMS. I am entitled to the discount, I want my discount. Anyhow, so once I found a few dealers that would accept my discount I went in and talked to some sales people to see how friendly they were. I ended up finding two dealers that were willing to take my GMS order and were friendly. I ended up choosing the one that let me test drive their red 1LT RS auto, no questions asked, simply handed me the keys. After the test drive, the salesman was pitching the sale to me pretty hard but I walked. Was not into the LT but told them i would be back. They said they had an allocation soon so i figured it would be soon. Well we went to look at a sold 2LT SIM and decided that was what it had to be SIM with the leather. We already knew we wanted an SS. So, SIM 2SSRS M6 it would be. We went back to the dealer we test drove from 2 days later and ordered it, May 23, 2009. Got everything in writing. the car shipped out of Dearborn on August 10, 2009. I went to the dealership on August 11, did all my paperwork and finalized everything. The car showed up August 12, 2009 and I took it home that day. As for the financing, i went through my Credit Union and had that taken care of in June so it was just a matter of faxing the dealership a letter of intent to pay. Simple. In the end it was by far the best car buying experience I have ever had. Everything was exactly as stated at time of order, actually the car came in faster than anyone expected.
Out the door with TTL and everything including a car cover I paid $36,100 for a 2SS/RS M6 with h/h stripes, no sunroof, no other options. MSRP was $35,915. I put $500 down (my deposit) and financed the rest. |

By ordering a car, you should get it at, or below, MSRP. GET IT IN WRITING!!
Average deposit seems to be $500-$1000. You don't have to finance it 'til you take possession. There're several SSs sitting at dealers ready for delivery now (at MSRP). Look for Becky's, Scotty's (and others') posts in the commercial vendors' section.
