I appreciate a petty insult as much as the next guy, but why? However, if you want to take a shot at me, I will defend myself. My test scores place me in the top 98% of my class, I attended a summer course at Columbia university this past summer and receive multiple college recruitment letters each month. No one has showed me how to get gas without holding the pump. That doesn't make me an idiot.

I used to have that problem in my old Chevy G-30 van, basically you need to find the sweet spot, and not set the flow full force. Thankfully I haven't had that problem with my camaro (2011), but I stand there just the same to make sure all goes well.

OP, I don't know if your local stations have that fume/vapor recapturing system on your nozzles, but that may add to your woes both by not allowing the back pressure to escape (the old HI-C can with only one hole) or by actually springing the nozzle out just enough when you let go to stop the pump.

OP, I feel your pain. Here is some advice:

Pull into the gas station. Pull up to the pump and stop within a reasonable distance so the hose will reach your gas filler door. Put the car in park (if auto) or 1st gear (if manual). Apply parking brake. Turn car off. Take keys out of ignition. Open the car door. Step out of the car and stand up. Close the car door after you've moved your body out of the way of the door. Walk to the gas filler door. Push on it slightly to open it. Then open it completely. Tell the gas attendant the amount of gas you want in dollars. Take the nozzle and insert it into the filler. Pull up on the handle to begin pumping gas. That should do it.

Hopefully we can get a sticky on how to properly fill our gas tanks. And one on windshield washer level indicators.

Instead of using the gas cap, squeeze the handle all the way and wedge a tennis ball in there. Works great!

I know my mom used to only go to places that filled it up for you, but after a while she gave up and started doing it herself because there wasn't anyone in the area that did it for you any more.

I'm guessing it's a union thing, so if you pumped your own they'd most likely send some muscle to your house to break both your arms so you wouldn't do it again.
