To Torq or Not?

This is kind of a silly quesiton but here it goes.

I want to purchase and install the ADM scoop. This requires removing the front drivers side wheel. My question is, placing the wheel back on after the modification is done, do I really need to use a torq bar to torq the wheel?

Can I just get away with using the old star figure torq method using a simple T bar? This would include starting with hand tightning all bolts then begin to slightly tightning each bolt using the T-bar in the star pattern? Reason I ask is because I dont have a torq wrench and really dont wanna spend a hundred bucks on one.

I guess I could always take it to a tire shop and get it torqed for a small fee now that I think about it.

Sears sells some really nice Craftsman Torque Wrenches for about $65, or even better when they are on sale. And yes, I would say torquing is a necessity....unless you want to take the chance of losing a wheel while driving.

Not sure about up in AB, but Northern Tool had a 1/2" drive that handled 150 ft/lbs for $35.

Yes, the lug nuts are one place where its very important. I'd recommend picking up one, since it likely that this won't be the last time you need it. You'll want a larger size (i.e 18+ inch handle) and 1/2 inch drive to get the leverage you need.

I'd have to try and guess at 140 ft-lbs... I bet it wouldn't take much over that to snap off a wheel stud. Plus its important that they all have the same torque to put even pressure on the brake disk.

Highly recommended you do so, torque to 100 just ask a shop to do it, takes about 2min to get it done

I agree that lug nut torque is important, but no need to remove the wheel for the ADM scoop. Just turn your wheel and you can do it. Kinda a PITA with the wheel on, but there is room if you are patient. Search a bit and there is at least one good thread on the install.

Thanks everyone for all the input. Gotroost, can the windshield washer bottle relocation kit also be installed without removing the wheel?

OEM torque spec is 140 lb/ft, and I highly recommend torquing it to that. I watched a wheel come off of an SUV once while going 60 on the highway - not pretty. Wheels are one of those "better safe than sorry" places I just don't want to test how far I can go before falling.

Sure! Plenty of room to relocate the bottle without taking the wheel off.
