if i was going to spray cler coat over it i would just as well get them painted on cause you never know what dust particles might get caught in the clear coat or something.

I honestly don't know for fact if they are vinyl or paint. I thought they were painted too...until I saw the ridge. From my knowledge, only if there were a few coats of paint, would there be a ridge as pronounced (which wasn't that bad...don't get me wrong)...as the ridge from the vert stripes.

The ridge (which wasn't that bad) made it look like vinyl....But Hell yeah!...they look GREAT!!!...and appear so nice that they are paint.

This is a good question for Scott....

I would avoid using the pressure washer, it shouldn't hurt them at first but over time it can damage them. I'm up to 10 years on my stripes now and they came from Chevrolet on the car. After about 8 years I started loosing a few little specs of the stripes on the edges. I've seen a few similar anniversary cars that have been abused missing larger pieces but the ones that Ive seen that only get to come out a few times a year still look new.

The worst part of having the vinyl is that you cant buff out small scratches.

After washing your stripes use some Wax-as-you-dry spray, it really brightens them up.

I saw the orange 'vert during Hotrod Power Tour '07, those stripes were painted on. It was a very expensive paint job, I believe the guy answering q's about the car told me it was something like $20K due to the paint being high dollar.

FWIW, my '06 Viper has painted on stripes too, and it also has an edge on the stripe. Not all painted stripes are smooth.

If the clear coat over the stripes only covers the stripes, it will still have a raised edge. I had vinyls on my car for 7yrs and with good care lasted that long before showing signs of fading, then I painted them on. Paint is better, but it is also very permanent and more than twice as expensive. Vinyl is a good choice for many people, inexpensive, looks good, and easy to change.

Painted on stripes don't have to be permanent. When custom painters add graphics to cars they usually paint them on top of a couple of layers of clear and then use a coat of clear between colors. They do that so if they mess up, they can sand off that layer without messing up the ones below it. This also allows you to sand off the stripes at a later date if you don't want them anymore.
