A little education for the newby please - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

Okay, I'm no mechanical wiz. Before getting my Camaro I probably knew just enough to keep myself safe (as oposed to enough to be dangerous). My Dad was a mechanic & he taught me basic things he thought I needed to know. Since being on this site I have been reading & trying to learn. Sometimes it gets hard because even reading some technical stuff is way over my head. But I thought I knew enough about my car to make it through my class reunion. Wrong! I was showing it to a classmate who started questioning me. I was okay with 0 to 60, HP, suspension, brakes, etc. He comments I could probably take him off the line but he thinks he would pass me before the quarter mile. Then he asks "I guess you don't know what kind of rear end it has do you?" Of course I did not. I asked my husband about it & he says "it's complicated" then tells me just enough to confuse me & stopped. I know this is not mechanics 101, but can anyone give me a basic understandable answer to the question?

He meant what gear you got in the rear. My SS has a 3.45 gear. Not sure what the v6's come with. The higher the number the smaller the gear. Higher numbered gears get you out of the hole faster at the dragstrip.

Thanks. That does not sound all that complicated. Maybe someone else will know the answer for the V6.

Is it manual or auto? I think the gears are different for each.

Here are to sites that are full of information. I don't know how accurate the first on is. It's from April 2008. The second on lists all the specs for both the SS and the V6 models at the end. I think the answer to your question is at the end of the 2nd article listed under "Final Drive". Which lists the V6, both auto and manual as 3.27. The V8 auto is also 3.27 and the V8 manual is 3.45. I have a V8 manual and know it is 3.45. The rest I can't confirm.

V6 auto and stick and the V8 auto all have 3.27 gear in the rear. SS LS3 stick has 3.45 gear.

Yours has a 3.27 in the rear end. the higher the number the more help the rear end gives you in acceleration. However the more help it gives you the worse your gas mileage will be do to the engine running faster (higher RPM) to go the same speed (MPH). So it will also lower the top speed, but thats not really an issue since without major power adders the Camaro runs out of steam long before gear.

I was thinking Independent Rear Suspension lol. Still who really needs to know the deep technical stuff. Knowing the Hp, Tq, Weight should be enough for most car guys or gals to understand how fast a vehicle is for the most part. No one knows everything about every car or most of the time even a single car.

I think he could be asking one of two things; One has been mentioned (the gear ratio) the other could be the type of rear end, i.e. solid rear axle, independent rear suspension like that.

The simple explanation for ratio is this: The number of times that the drive shaft turns compared to one turn of the rear wheel. So, if your driveshaft turned 4 1/3 times around and the tire went around one time that would be a 4.33 ratio. I believe the V6 comes with a 3.27:1 gear ratio.

Ok, I have a LS3 with a 3.45. I don't need the exceration that much. Anyone with a L99 want to swap rear ends. You pay the shop fees. Before this discussion, I didn't know the LS3 and L99 had different rear ratios. I will some day boost my LS3 and the torque increase from a supercharger will make up for the lower gears, while having the lower gears will give me a higher top speed once ECU tuning removes the 155mph speed govenor. Anyone?

Don't feel bad, I'm pretty flueint in cars and understood the question. I knew my V8, manual had a 3.45, but until I researched it I thought all Camaros had a 3.45 ratio.
