Camaro vs SS engines.
Doing a little research into a 2nd vehicle for use as a family/daily driver, I really like the looks/feel of the new Chevy SS sedan.
But one thing came up that I'm not sure about. The SS says it has the LS3 engine, but it also has the 6sp automatic transmission. Wouldn't this mean it has the L99 or has Chevy figured out how to marry up the LS3 to an auto trans?

Based on what I have read it does not have cylinder deactivation. Hence the MPG numbers.

It's an ls3 hooked up to an auto. The l99 and ls3 designation has nothing to do with auto/manual. More the internals like afm and cylinder deactivation among other things.

It also has the gas guzzler tax, that is why the Camaro has the L99 with auto to avoid the tax.

Ah, that makes sense. I've never really followed the L99 stuff since I've only ever had my LS3 Camaro.

As mentioned, the C6 Corvette used the LS3 with both auto and manual. But also mentioned was the gas guzzler tax. The Camaro is a much higher volume production car. The SS sedan will be pretty low volume in comparison. So, in order to meet the CAFE standards GM does some things that we as enthusiasts sometimes seem to think is stupid.
