Go Team Canada!

BOOYA!

Looks like we're off to the right start in Junior hockey:

Looks like Sweden is burning up the ice, too.

Awesome!

I missed the 1st period and saw it was 5-0. I stuck around to see how wide a margin we would win by. Its impressive and sadening to see a game where you score more goals in the first 2 periods than the other team has shots durring the entire game. They need to change the tie-breaker rules to discourage running up the score like that. And its not just Canada, 10-1 Sweden vs Czeck Republic? Maybe use goals against as the #2 tie breaker and points spread as #3? As it is now, the differential is #2 and goals for is #3.

Don't get me wrong, I love seeing team Canada kick ass. Its that it seems wrong when the rules encourage blowouts like we saw yesterday.

Rules do not encourage blowouts . It's a shame that in a blowout, one team looks really bad, however, the winning team shows talent & chemistry.

Just to put things into perspective, I know very well, that our team could experience the same, if we meet a better team, at any time.

Correct! Total goals are tie breaking factor. No Mercy in this tourney.

Not much chance of that.

Perhaps I misused 'blowout'. Running up the score is much more accurate for what I meant. Any way you wish to describe it, the tournament rules encourage it:

  4. Game Winning Shot competition between the teams concerned.
#2 and #3 encourage running up the score as much as possible for each round robin game. If Canada doesn't then the Russians will so if we are tied in points, we'd get shafted for being nice. Thats why I suggest using goals against then the differential. It reduces the incentive to run up the score.

Those kids played a great game. I'm sure it went a long way towards turning a collection of players into a unified team, which will be needed later in the tournament. I'm eager to see what they do against the Swiss tomorrow, though I'll be surprised if we win by less than 5.
