Next Cam No Idea What To Do
Hi guys I have done the regular bolt ons and it is time for a Cam but I have no idea what I should get. I do not mind the car to shake a bit at idle but nothing crazy. I do a lot of highway driving and back roads so I like a mix of low end torque and highspeed passing. I do go to the track to drag but not that often were I would want that to be a big part of my decision. I can see myself maybe supercharging the car if the Z28 does not not come out in the next year of so. What would you guys advise and what kind of HP and performance would I be looking at with my mods in my sig? Thanks for your help

Just remember this... A wider LSA is your friend.
You might want to consider some 4.10's. Don't fear the gear.

4.10's will be gd on the highway. One of the Jannetty cars with 750 rwhp is at 1950 @ 70 with the 4.10's. With these cars being so heavy you need a low gear. You'll be happier with the 4.10's. I think Ted is building a pumpkin as I speak.

You shouldn't be doing 90! I'm just kidding! I'm not one of those people on here. There is a calculator on here that will help you, problem is I dont know where it is. Try the trans forum or the wiki page. Or someone smarter than me will chime in.

Here is what I dug up from the links above: The formula used for determining RPM given MPH, axle gear ratio, transmission gear ratio, and tire size is the following: mph X 336.1524 X final drive ratio X transmission gear ratio ÷ tire diameter (inches) Or, the un-simplified long version: mph X 12 (inches per foot) X 5280 (feet per mile) X axle gear ratio X transmission gear ratio pi (3.14159265) X tire diameter X 60 (minutes per hour) Hydra-Matic 6l80 six-speed automatic (A6 SS) w/ TAPshift Gear ratios (:1): First: 4.03 Second: 2.36 Third: 1.53 Fourth: 1.15 Fifth: 0.85 Sixth: 0.67 Reverse: 3.06 Final drive ratio: 3.27 TR6060 six-speed manual (M6 SS) Gear ratios (:1): First: 3.01 Second: 2.07 Third: 1.43 Fourth: 1.00 Fifth: 0.84 Sixth: 0.57 Reverse: 3.28 Final drive ratio: 3.45 So, for me this equation with stock tires @ 28.7" tall and 6th gear trans ratio of .67 @ 70mph w/ 4.10 = 2252rpm @ 75mph w/ 4.10 = 2414rpm @ 70mph w/ 3.73 = 2048rpm @ 75mph w/ 3.73 = 2195rpm @ 80mph w/ 3.37 = 2341rpm |

Yeah....I'm torn on the next major mod. Either cam or gears. I really want the sound of a nice cam but the cam will definately kill the drivetrain warranty. With gears I can probably get away without them knowing the gears were swapped.
With an LS3 I think I'm going to lean towards the 4.10 gears. I'm waiting to see what the cost is going to be on JRE's pumpkin swap because I want it built right the first time and I also want the Pedders bushings as well.

Call Ted and ask. I dont want to start quoting prices. But he has a core to do it. Just a matter if you just want gears or the posi mod too. My car seems great with the 4.10's. A little nerving to drive but Ill get you use to it again.

Lingenfelter is what you want
You want the lingenfelter GT-11 CAM, check it out on the website.
I have it installed in my car with 1.75 Pace Setter Long Tubes, no cats and a tune and I picked up 80 rwhp, plust the car idles and drives normal, it is louder now, but I expected that. 2010 Camaro 2SS 6M Breathless Performance CAI, Lingenfelter GT-11 Cam, Pace Setter 1.75 long tube headers, no cats, BMPR mufflers. |
