100 Octane

Hey all my Louisiana guys and gals, where around here can I get 100 octane from the pump? I can't seem to find anything searching online so I figured I'd ask on here. I'd maybe look into filling my car with it all the time and tuning my car to 100 rather than 93. What kind of horsepower difference would it make tuning it for 100? And how much more expensive is this type of octane?

if you cant find it everywere I wouldnt be tuning for it. 1 station used to sell it next to the race track in lancaster NY. it was $2.50 more than 93. That was when 93 was $1.50.

Not a good idea if you have cats. The lead content in 100LL will contaminate them.

I run 93 Octane at the track, no point in running 100 or something crazy expensive. Especially when I burn through a 1/4 tank or so every 25 minutes.

I don't think it will do much for you. Anything over 93 would be pretty much a waste on these cars unless you're planning on running nitrous, a turbocharger, or a supercharger.

Also, running a higher octane than required can actually make less HP because your basically wasting energy. The whole point of higher octane is to run more advanced timing or higher compression, and you can only do so much with the timing, otherwise you're throwing money away.

I know, but most people don't really understand exactly what octane really is. They seem to think that it is the energy in the gasoline or something, when the opposite is true. The bottom line is that for maximum power you want just enough octane to prevent denotation and no more. Octane above what you need to prevent denotation will actually reduce power, but just slightly. I'd rather have too much octane than not enough. If you get too much, you will only reduce power slightly. Not enough could destroy your engine. But that's not likely on a modern computer controlled engine, with knock sensor feedback. On that type of engine, you normally just loose power.
The manufacturers try to make modern cars idiot proof, but sometimes, I don't think they don't realize the caliber of idiots that they are dealing with.

I would agree with both of the above. But from my experience, the cats will burn off I think too lol

I used to work at Santa Rosa airport fueling aircraft at 'Sonoma Aviation' soon after I got out of the service. I used to drive this 1978 Toyota Celica 5speed that I pretty much beat to shit. It was a fun little ride. Used to drive from Santa Rosa, CA to Lemoore, Ca (about 300 miles) to see my then Girl Friend.... little bugger was fast too.

One of the benefits of working at a small airport was being able to use 100 Low Lead on that ride (among other things, of course). It definitely gave it some power, but you could also smell the cats burning hot... too hot I think.

I eventually left Santa Rosa CA for SoCal, and I owned that little ride for a good while after that. The tranny blew before the cats went once it was finally done.... tho, not sure if there were any cats left. Got it for $250, sold it for $100 tore up and that was that.

Moral of the story - don't use 100LL if you've got cats on. Will add power tho.
