I liked the Volbeat song I heard the other day and had my son (17 yrs old) take a listen and he hated the vocals. I was actually surprised, yeah not the greatest, but overall the song kicked ass.

One of the biggest problems in comparing current music to classic rock is that classic rock stations only play the best songs from the best artists from a span of roughly 30 years. And yeah, its pretty good -because they can pick and choose from the best. And those songs or artists are not always the ones that were most popular back in their day, in fact they almost never are. But a modern rock station doesn't have that luxury. They have to play whatever is popular & current, not necessarily what is good. Thats where a lot of the generic post-grunge crap comes in. There is still lots of good stuff out there, and thankfully its easier than ever to find.

Further complicating things is that for nearly everyone, the best music (in their opinion) is the stuff that they grew up on. Some of the other stuff from before or since might be ok, but most of it just doesn't have it. Whatever qualities they are looking for in music, the best place they can find it is stuff from 'their' era. For someone like me, most classic rock is too weak and 80s hair/glam metal was simply embarassing. Most of my favourite albums came out right around the year 2000. Hybrid Theory, Hell Billy Deluxe, Break the Cycle, Lateralus, The Sickness. I know intellectually that as good as some of that is, its not the greatest music ever. But on a more basic level my gut tells me that, nothing from any other period can compare.

I hate the rap music. Today's rock is crap to me. My father had me grow up with journey, foreigner, Kansas.

Mind you, I'm 20.

It's that damn evolution. Things are changing, everybody. Elements that were once very separate, or didn't exist at all, are now being combined in ways that the artists feel work. Welcome to 2013.

I agree with some of what you said, and I as well love the albums, and bands you mentioned. I grew up in the 80's, and yes some of it was embarrassing, but let us not forget the 80's gave us Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Anthrax, we even got one of the best rock/metal albums of all time Appitite for Destruction, and a ton of other killer bands that changed the way it was done.

And not all hair metal bands sucked either, granted toward the end of the 80's it all got watered down, even one of my favorite hair bands pissed me off after their first two albums, and that was Mötley Crüe. I loved the first two albums, then came out that girls girls girls/home sweet home crap..

I miss the 90's early 2000's music more then the 80's, I even miss the rock/rap nu-metal era of that time. Limp Bizkit was so energized live during that time, it was awesome..

But TOOL, NIN, White Zombie, and a few other are still my favorites..

My personal favorite band of today is Foo Fighters....

Anything Corey Taylor sings is great. FFDP is awesome...heard a song this morning by them I haven't heard before "Lift Me Up"...very good.

Thats their first single off their new album, just released a few days ago. They have a 2 part album coming this year. First one hits some time this summer, the second will be in the fall.

I agree with this completely, new music is terrible these days. Horrible. And I hate rap music.

I pretty much only listen to rock. There is not one band that I like that formed after 2004. None. Any new music that I like, comes from older bands, mostly 90's bands.

I'd say my top 5 favorite bands are Alter Bridge, Smashing Pumpkins, Rammstein, Pearl Jam, and Collective Soul.
