Request help with decision

I bought my 2001 Z28, 5.7 new and took excellent care with it, no hot-rodding, frequent oil changes etc. I did have the rear main seal replaced and while down had the clutch and pressure plate replaced… thought it did not really need it. The car has 140,000 miles. Strangely, I started the car in the drive and a rod broke. I now have the option of a $6,000 engine replacement or selling it as is. I would appreciate you guys input. -Mike

my .02

sell as is or keep it and put a hot cammed LS3 back in it. hard call to make really as it depends on how much you like the car.

480hp crate motor in there would make it a blast though.

Get a quote from a different mechanic. That engine replacement should be 1/2 that cost.

Yeah, there are some really good crate motors out there. It really does depend on how attached you are to that car

If you are fixing just to sell sell now if you want to keep the car go for it but understand you will never get your money back but that doest matter if intend to keep it

I dunno, with 140,000miles and no motor, what are you really going to get for it as it sits?? Not a lot I'm thinking. You've had the car 11 years already, took good care of it. I'm thinking you really never had any intention of selling it to begin with so why let this change your mind. Replace the engine and use this opportunity for a tranny check-up as well. You either sell it for nothing with no motor or swap the motor and loose money. Might as well fix it and enjoy it.

Thank guys

Thanks for your words of wisdom they echo mine and the research done. I hoped all you would give me some unrealistic Disney Land answer so I would not have to face reality. Cheers… Mike

Sorry to hear about your motor... :( And its been living in the South this whole time right?? Up North underbodies don't last too long if driven in the winter conditions so they drive winter "beaters" or 4X4's then break out the hot rods in summer/spring. If interior is still in pretty good shape I vote for the replacement motor.

Then again, if you want something different (and can stomach the payments) go for new or nearly new. So.... w/that option you can help out your favorite auto manufacturer!!
