gasoline drips on the paint

Hey guys,

not sure if this happens to anyone else, but sometimes i pull out the pump out of the gas tanks i get a few drops that sometimes hit the paint of the car under the gas cap.

i usually wipe it off with my shirt or throw some water on it. but is it bad for the paint itself i assume it chews some of the clear coat off but overall is it a major issue for the paint? if so, should i go home and throw some soap and water on the spot??

thanks guys

If your removing it and not allowing it to dwell on the surface for an extended period of time, you shouldn't have any damage to the clear coat.

I would use care in "wiping" anything off your paint when the surface is not lubricated. Any grit or dirt on your shirt or on the surface that is rubbed in will do more damage to the clear coat than a spot of gas that sits a few seconds.

To avoid this problem in the future, after you finish putting gas in your car. Shut the pump off, (many do this automatically now) hold the pump handle in one hand with trigger depressed, and shake the hose gently with the other hand(take care not to bang it against the car).

This will get the gas that's still in the hose near the nozzle end out, then before you fully remove the nozzle, tap it a couple times gently on the metal opening, if their is still a drop or two on the tip this will remove it.

Also their is a little "hanger" for the gas cap which is located on the inside of the cover, use it to hang the cap to keep it from dangling and brushing against the paint.

Leave nozzle in the gas tank a few extra seconds longer that should remedy any dripping.

As the others said, shake the nozzle or leave it there so you don't get dripping.

If you do, spray a liberal amount of waterless wash and wipe with MF towel.

That and turn the nozzle up as your pulling it out, I have yet to get any gas on the side of my car during fill up....

It happens to me sometimes. I try to tap the nozzle against the rim (phrasing!) but at times a few drops of gas will drip down the fender. It pisses me off but it does happen.

As you remove the nozzle from the fuel filler, start rotating it so that the nozzle points up. I never have gas drip on the car.

Problem solved.

One easy thing to do is grab one of the blue shop towels that most gas stations have and hold it below the nozzle as you pull it out. You can also use the towel to wipe around the gas cap area to make sure that you keep it clean.

No matter how careful, there's almost always a drop that's gonna save itself until you zip your pants back up.

BDP

Oh, this is actually about a fuel nozzle?

I keep a clean lint free cloth in the glove compartment to wipe off any drips.
