This topic is timely, I'm at the beginning stages of my ownership and I'm getting curious about CAI, exhaust, and short throw shifters. Part of me thinks, hey, this is the fastest car I've ever driven, stock it goes 0-60 at 4.7. So why mess with it?

But then I hear some sexy exhaust, or I nearly miss a gear when shifting, and then my imagination starts working on me again.

Plus some of these mods are not that expensive. I'm just not sure where to start, since this is my daily driver

I hope that clears up everything.
Look at the standard Camaro setup and tell me what the difference is between stock and after market CAI, that's going to make 10-15 more hp??? the only diff I see is the larger Air filter, which might get you a little more. I have one, but I'll be happy if I'm getting a 5hp increase.

Some people actually use Camaros as daily drivers, and get caught in clouud bursts.

That would be me, for example.
I have an cold air intake, washer reservoir relocation, and race scoop. I drove through rain that would have scared Noah last week (Houston). When I got home to check, the filter and scoop were both bone dry.

No problems with this setup and daily driving through poor weather.

Voumetric efficency. The stock air box has sound baffels built into it that create vortices of turbulence and that is one of the biggest factors, and the stock air box has no true cold air clear access.

Why are there so many responses about rain and snow? I've had cold air intakes on almost every daily driver I've owned and I've always driven in rain and snow with no issues.

Noise, emissions, etc I can understand but rain and snow are not the reason.

I'd bet that part of the reason was also the emissions standards that are different from state to state. Most of the aftermarket cai's don't have the CARB EO number, making them illegal in California and Washington (and 2 other states, I think, can't remember which ones...) - not that it really stops anyone from getting them

I have a CAI Inc. Let's just look at some differences.

OEM is all plastic (not good for removing heat) has sound baffles in it to restrict airflow and has dead end airflow channels inside.

Mine is an all aluminum box with heat shield insulation, ceramic coated intake tube that removes heat. No sound baffles and a better airflow.

Sucking in hot air = less power period.

But back to the OP question, unless you get into the super car realm, there is always a balance of cost, performance, economy, liability, and above all else no matter what the engineers reccomend, between the marketing to the different demographics and the been counters, even a fraction of a cent over budget can get nixed and then its a dead issue.

And, if you look at the intake boxes of today VS 10 years ago, most incorporate some sort of cold air entrance to some extant. Not near what the good after market units give (CA Inductions my favorite), but leaps and bounds over the ones jsut a few years ago. Look at a 2011-2012 chrager or challenger....they are a true cold air intake that just needs a better flowing filter and of course a smooth coupler is far more volumetric efficient tha a accordian style.

Good question though and if let loose with no budget and other contraints the engineers would put out some "sky's the limit" vehicles as the talent is there.

I trust your judgement. Mainly just pointing out that the cheap and lazily developed CAI's aren't going to make a seat of the pants difference over the stock box. Its not as if the stock box is holding back 40hp or something. Were talking a few HP for the cheap CAI's. No one is going to notice that. I know the CAI brand has very good results and I'll be getting one at some point.

So complicated

I read, and read everything about all CAI options, But I have installed a G5CR Cai and it gets fresh air from Nickey Stinger Hood with functionnal Ram Air that gets fresh air directly to the filter and I'm very, very satisfied with the results, and it looks great to.
So it's a matter of opinion.
Some are better that others, but I don't think that any type are bad.

I know this is a bit off topic but do you have any pics of the underside of the hood? I'd love to see how the air is directed to the filter.

They only have them for 6er it looks like. So I don't think you can throw one on the 1LE or SS for that matter
