There's nothing wrong with the track it's actually a good design with plenty of distance to stop, but not enough brake on the car. The chute wouldn't have done anything to stop that car in time, you have to be up speed and accelerating to have a chute deploy properly and him having fuel issues and bucking the entire pass there's no way it would have been as effective as it normally is.

Really???? And you are obviously a drag race expert! Parachutes are on the car for a reason, nothing but pilot error on this one, if he'd pulled them any time he would not have been in the sand. Chutes work best if deployed under power but they still work pretty damn good if not , especially at 190 mph.

I guess eating rocks is better than smashing into a wall. So he didn't realize that he was going that fast = driver error! He seemed to have a good attitude about it, considering what happened.

On one hand, they probably got sand in the engine.... which sucks.
On the other hand... they own a car that does 190mph in the 1/4!!! Life is good for them. They'll be ok.

Shit happens that's why the pit is there. Years ago a friend of mine went off the end of a track on his top fuel Harley, we buried him. No pits back then.

I'm impressed that he still did 190 with how poorlyrics the car was running. Not really understanding how he ended up in the gravel trap though.

At those speeds things happen real fast.

This was pure driver error. It happens...
There is some truth in being under power accelerating when deploying the chute. I can show several videos where the driver lifted off the gas, and even started braking as the chute deployed. Why do we want to be under power, for weight transfer. The chute deploying is quite often violent. It has set off OnStar in my car... deploying it at 217 mph. As for the chute helping in this case or not I can deploy my chute at 60 mph and it will substantially effect the speed of the car. There are multiple types of chutes out there with different deployment methods, but most all of them have drogue chutes to pull and deploy the main chute. The drogue chute is accompanied by a big spring to launch the drogue into the air stream. This pulls the main chute out allowing it to fill with air and slow the car. There are also air/nitrogen (gas) driven chute launchers. Technology and safety considerations are driving the technology in this area as well. I will be installing a MOTEC dash in my car, that has accelerometers which can be tied into a solenoid and if the car gets sideways as in a sudden unexpected movement, the chute will automatically deploy assisting in keeping the car straight and slowing. Some will say they want full control, but at well in excess of 200 mph things like computers can save a life, by responding way faster than any human can... Better to give up a bad pass even if I don't make the final decision than lose the car or worse.

Any of the above, mechanical error, driver error or very possibly a combination of both. If something failed such as the chute or brakes by the time the driver reacts it may be to late.
