GM ASA cam

A friend of mine is giving me a good deal on a GM ASA cam. Is there anyone using this cam? I would like to hear thoughts. The specs are 226/236 .525/.525 110 lsa. I kind of wish it was on an 112 lsa. My car is a m6 with 3.91 gears & will have long tubes on it before the cam is installed. It also is my daily driver. Thanks in advance.

Don't. Go get a better sized cam with 3.91. You'll net 30 more RWHP and better sound in the aftermarket.

The cam is spec-ed out to be easy on the stock drivetrain and circle track ASA racing friendly being for a class of stock car for racing..the Camaro/Corvette ls3 Our stock cam has a lot of LSA and lower duration so this cam can make a car sound cammed and will give it more power yet still there are better cams and even with it I would recommend upgrading springs...etc. Most likely to have that cam are aftermarket installs of crate ls3.

Someone with a 1LE installed the Howard's Cams version of the ASA or Hot Cam from GM and put down some very very respectable numbers.

Edit: dyno sheet of that cam in a 1LE

Cam has a great torque curve. I take the 1LE results as exception more than the rule.

While I realize that there are better cams out there, this deal is hard to pass up. Cam, upgraded springs, pushrods, timing set, hv oil pump $200. I have a good friend that seems to find me some deals.

well you know the numbers the stock rated engine comes in crate form with the hot cam doing 480 hp compared to 426 and the ASA doing 525....... sure not exactly the numbers of other high lifts, but with easier on the valve train life and a common option for upgrading say: older corvettes, older Camaros etc....... I know my tuner Tommy Wong has installed several of these up in Vancouver at Wongs performance engineering.

I just finished building an ls2 with the asa cam. The engine was a 4.005 bore 3.622 stroke, 11:1 compression, cathedral port heads 243, factory rockers/springs, and fast intake. The engine made 547hp with a conservative tune. The engine is designed for road racing application. Hope this helps.

I installed the Howards Cams version of the ASA cam and couldn't be happier.
You saw my dyno sheet.
This cam is easy on the valvetrain, makes great power and even sound nice.
This with headers, hi flows and a great dyno-tune made my 1LE what it should have been from the factory. Like a different car.
A couple other guys on this forum followed in my footsteps and they too are thrilled.

I want to install a cam myself this winter(Jan/Feb) My 1le is a DD/365. I have to have OEM reliability/longevity, once it is installed I never want to have to maintain the valve train or worry about it. I don't drag race, not worried about 1st/2nd gear, I spend most of my time in 3rd/4th tearing the freeway/interstate up. I was looking at the ASA cam for this reason, is this Howards cam the next best option? What is different between the two? Better power under the curve or just better peak numbers?

To the OP, if you are installing yourself I think it would be worth it to go with the ASA deal, then you would be saving some cash for a little sacrifice in power. If you are having someone install, might as well spend a little extra for the best cam possible.

The Howard's Cams version of the ASA cam has different ramp rates compared to the GM version I believe. So unless you're getting a crazy good deal, get the Howard's version. Howards ASA comes in two different Lobe Separation Angles: 110 and 113

I would go with PAC 1218 springs or PSI 1511 springs because of the more aggressive lobes. Blue GM LS6 springs will work but will not control the valves if you rev too high.

The stock springs work very well with this cam. You are correct though if you want to spin it faster than the stock redline. Not sure why you would though, I left the stock rev limit and you can see on my Dyno Sheet that there is no need to excede it as the power starts to drop off at the top anyways. This cam is a great 2000-6500 rpm choice, the HP levels off at 6000 and the TQ falls off after 6000.
