Torquing down timing cover before balancer?
I haven't had any issues so far (5000 miles since) but after replacing my oil pump that failed I believe I mistakenly tightened down the timing cover BEFORE installing the balancer.
Like I said, I've had zero issues so far but how critical is this step and if it is...what would be the fix? Thanks, Steve

You'd have an oil leak if it was off enough...essentially by installing the crank pulley while the cover is loose, you're allowing the pulley to move the seal around to center itself. If you're off center by enough the crank seal will wear prematurely and leak, and you'll need to take the pulley and cover back off again to put a new one in.
GM procedure is to use an alignment tool to center the cover so you can torque the fasteners, and then install the crank pulley after.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out...I'm assuming that the oil leak would occur at the crank seal?

Yeah, right around the crank itself.
