1997 RS Coupe owner. Need some Y87 help.

Hello all,

I am a 1st time Camaro owner and I git a great deal on a 1997 RS Coupe. I have 4 disc brakes, dual factor exhaust, aluminum 5 spoke rims. I believe that I have the y87 performance package but my RPO codes are worn out. Any way to get these or the build sheet with the vin#. Any help or infor is appreciated.

You should be able to get a printout of your RPO codes from any GM dealer. All you need to give them is your VIN.

I believe all 1996-97 RS models also came with the Y87 option code as standard.

I have been that route wuth GM and Chevy and both have told me they do not go back that far and referred me to the other. As for it being standard. I have done a lot of readind and I know Y87 was a definite option. I jut am not sure if I have the POSI rear end, stearing ration or gear ratio. The 4 disc brakes and dual exhaust were patt of y87 but not sure ig they were stand alone options

According to my 1996 Camaro brochure, Y87 was a separate option and not included with the RS option package.

RPO Y87 included all of the following:
4-wheel disc brakes
Quick ratio steering (Z28)
Z28 Sway bars, springs and shocks
Dual outlet exhaust
Posi-Traction differential (3.42 Manual) (3.23 Automatic?)

Essentially, RPO Y87 turned the Camaro V6 models into a Z28 without having the V8 motor.

Well the RS is a base with the appearance package and there was Y87 available on the RS. Maybe it was a seperate code if it was an RS. Thanks for tgr response.

Sport Steering (14.4:1 ratio – same as V8 cars)

99-01 differences

Zexel-Torsen T-2 Limited Slip Differential (G80)
Sport Steering (14.4:1 ratio – same as V8 cars)
Four-wheel Disc Brakes (J65) std
3.23's were only on the 5 speeds all 93-02 V6's
3.42's auto only (GU6)


Y87 dropped for 02, still possible to have all or some of these options though, has they were using up inventory

sway bars are not part of the GM package, that was the 01-02 SLP package

sway bar sizes 93-97 v6 30mm / 17 mm 98-02 28mm 15mm

no it wasnt part of the RS , but almost all 96 rs's have it.


RPO codes that SPECIFICALLY identify a 96-97 RS!

CAMARO RS
coupe/convertible/preferred equipment group
1SN/1SR/BASE MODEL
1SP/1SS/PREFERRED EQUIPMENT GROUP 1
1SQ/1ST/PREFERRED EQUIPMENT GROUP 2

A regular V6 Camaro coupe will only be 1SA, 1SB, or 1SC
the convertible will be 1SD, 1SE, or 1SF.
