The fading is actually oxidization of the rubber. You need to properly clean it with an all purpose cleaner of your choice, then top it with something such as VRT or some other dressing of your choice to prevent it from happening again. If you don't clean the surface, when the VRT wears off, it will look just as bad. Also leaving the surface unclean before you dress it will prevent your dressing from penetrating the rubber therefore the dressing won't last nearly as long.

Correct on all points. Also the oxidation of exterior rubber can be made even worse by the use of harsh detergents. If you use touchless washes for example - often times the chemicals used are rather aggressive (they have to be in order to clean without mechanical agitation) and will prematurely dry rubber trim. There can also be environmental factors... my friends who live near the beach have horrible fading and oxidation on their trim thanks to the salt air and lots of sun exposure.
As the others mentioned, clean well and dress with a water based dressing, assuming they're not too far gone they'll look good as new. |

How much should the APC be diluted for cleaning this area? Concerned about getting it on my paint while cleaning the rubber.

Spray it onto a towel and scrub the rubber. It won't have any overspray then. Also make sure to rinse the area before dressing to make sure all of the apc is off. You can just rinse with a wet towel.

Wolfgang probably makes one of the best trim protecants, but it's $20.00 for a 3 oz. bottle.
The challenge of finding a good trim protectant is one that... 1.) Isn't too greasy 2.) Provides a nice, uniform black color 3.) Most importantly IMO, doesn't run or come off when it rains. So far, only a handful of companies make trim protectants that bead water and don't run off. Adams and Wolfgang are two of them. |
