Catch Can Oil Amount (LFX)
So I've had my 2013 LS1 for 5500 miles, and at 5000 miles I installed an Elite Engineering catch can. As of today, it's been 500 miles with it installed so I figured I'd take a look. I found a lot more oil in it than I was expecting. Just shy of 1 TBSP (talked the wife into letting me borrow her measuring scoop). I haven't really been pushing it very hard the past 500 miles, just back and forth to work. Is this a normal amount of oil to be finding?
Also, as shown in the pictures, I noticed that the PCV fitting on the engine was not the type I've seen in various threads with the two tiny holes in the bottom and the larger, albeit still small, hole on top. No, mine is wide open the whole way through. I tested this using the drill bit (the tape was to make sure I didn't lose it, would it have slipped). Is this wide open fitting the norm for the 2013 LFX? Could this be related to (what I see as) the high quantity of "caught oil"? |

CRAP, Now I feel even worse about not having a catch can! I feel exhaust is more important, then washing supplies, then a catch can. And sorry I don't know, you'd probably have better luck in the LFX section.

If 1tbsp per 500mi is typical then I sprayed 10tbsp (.15qt) of oil through my intake manifold before installing the catch can! If that's the case I'll probably be giving the Sea Foam spray a try.

I hesitate to say the amount you are getting is normal but most drivers I've spoken to are usually alarmed at how much oil they drain from their catch can.
On my LS3 the catch can gets a lot. I drain it every 800 miles or so. |

All engines are different depending on ring seating....the harder driven during breakin, the less oil usage as the rings seat better (you only have a 500 mile initial window or the cylinders glaze over, and the rings if not seated will allow excess blow by and oil usage.
The main thing is you add one of the few good cans like this from day one, and (personal choice) break it in properly...and that's drive it hard enough to seat those rings. If you have a LLT or LFX and are NOT running one, here is what your intake valves look like: http://www.google.com/search?q=intak...w=2021&bih=875 |

I'm guessing I didn't break it in hard enough then. If this is the case, then I'm assuming I can be expecting these quantities of oil from here-on-out or is there something I can do about it?
