So the 29mpg isn't a myth after all!
Like many of you, I've been driving my Camaro like I stole it off the lot since day one. So I wasn't surprised to see that my avg fuel economy is around 20mpg.
Yesterday I decided to carry out an experiment, to see just how efficient the Camaro can be... Using Manual Mode, my goal was to use the Paddle Shifters to keep the RPMs as low as possible while maintaining an acceptable acceleration and top speed. Having a 6 speed really helps with the efficiency. Yesterday's test was 30 miles of back roads, speed limit was 50 with numerous lights, stops and turns. I managed to comfortably keep her around 1300-1700 RPMs with no problems. Avg mpg: 31.2 This morning I rounded out the test with my morning commute, 35 miles of back roads/highway (50/50%) with the same goal in mind...keep the RPMs low while blending with traffic. Managed 1300-1600 RPMs throughout the whole trip while maintaining the 65mph speed limit. Avg mpg: 33.4 I was pleasantly suprised by the results, plus it was fun feeling out the paddle shifting. Lovin' this car more and more each day! |

Going just by the DIC ... My 2LT is getting 17 around town and my SS is getting 14 and change. The best I've gotten in the 2LT is 27.8 and in the SS 26.7 both were on the Interstate ...

I got 24 on a weekend road trip that was mainly small highways and a few back roads....wasn't even consciously trying to get better mpg, but that always works out for the better in the end of a long road trip!

my best so far by the DIC all highway is 27.6mpg. there is still some left in it as it gets more miles on it so i'm sure i will reach 28-29 or more mpg soon.

We went to New Orleans recently and it said on the DIC that our avg was 30.4 and that was with the cruise control set at 78. lol. (But I also have exhaust and CAI and that helps, lol)

my 15mile one way commute with many stop lights - I only average 18.8 mpg right now...pretty disappointing...I'm hoping intake and exhaust clean that up a bit

I think where the efficiency kicked in was self-policing my acceleration (especially during acceleration from a dead stop or the on-ramp), and I was quick to keep the car from going above 2k at anytime.
I must admit this isn't normally how I drive, as it felt like I was Driving Miss Daisy during the test. I don't think I will be driving that "leisurely" from now on just to squeeze another 25% out of my fuel, as it put too much focus on the Tachometer and not enough on the road. I'm also wondering just how accurate the "Avg Mpg" tracker is on the Camaro is in the short term, I would like to believe I was squeezing 33+mpg out of her, but again who knows. |

I drove from Atlanta area to near Birmingham. Drove 73 mph and got 27.9 mpg. When entering Alabama the speed limit is 55 on I-20. I drove 60 and got 29.9. I was impressed especially after I modded my car with a cam, headers, cai etc....this was with the A/C on. I am waiting till it gets cooler to see if I can improve on that in the winter. Take in mind no stop start traffic and I was real easy on the throttle just to see how high I could get it.
The best I had ever got was about 27 mpg at 60. At 73 she just cruised down the road, nice to know on long trips. Where my mileage suffered was around town, I actually lost a little bit but probably due to my driving habits in town. I have driven this car to work this week some town, some interstate and the average was 23.5 but again I didn't dog it, just slow and easy. On my way home that evening I drove it normally and my fuel economy was 21.5. Still not bad, especially when you consider my dd is a 2500 hd 4x4 duramax with a 6" lift and 35's |
