LED footwell lights install
Hi all, new guy here, the name's Bill, just Bill.
I've been looking at all the great threads on here and you all have been very helpful. However there is one question I have that I don't seem clear on you all might be able to help with. I just ordered 2 sets of LED lights from AAC to go under the dash to light up the footwell for a friend who has a 2011 Camaro. I want the lights to come on when you open the door, but also have the option to turn them off or on anytime the car is running. I made a crude (very crude) picture that hopefully shows how I think you can do that. Basically I assume you can link the 2 light sets together by just tapping into one light set wires, right? Then I would make a hot wire tapped in between the lights and included on/off switch to the grey wire that is the dome light. I saw that in another thread here. That way they will come on when the doors are opened. Then I hook the end of the wires coming from the on/off switch to a fuse and ground. That way you can turn the lights on or off when the car is moving. Yet they still come on when doors are opened. Does that sound like it would work right? Oh, the reason for 2 sets of lights is I want to put one set under the seats to show the back seat footwells. Or maybe string them up in the trunk. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I'm doing this as a Christmas gift. Thanks! |

Actually what would work is putting in another on/off switch on the lead going to the dome light, adding the ground wire to that also. But then it gets more complex than someone might want, having to deal with two switches.

Well after some more looking around I guess my question has been answered in this thread:
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1224402 Seems like I need a relay switch to do what I want. You have to go a few pages into that thread to find it. Sorry for bothering anyone, I'll post some pics when I get it done. |

Thanks Mr_Draco, that's exactly what I need. Now I can really see what I need to do. Sometimes I just need to see it written down in front of my face.

Sorry to bump this back up but I have one more question.
When I hook up in the fuse box, what fuse should I use? That is what amp fuse,, 5, 10, 15 or what? I got one of those add-a-fuse things but have no idea what slot to use it in for footwell LED lights? I'll take pics when I do this and post how I made both the dome light connection and fuse power connection so you can switch to whatever way you want to use. |

Easiest fix is to throw in a diode and keep the current from going back to the dome light. Easy install. Also, I would highly recommend not using a tap on the gray dome light wire as it can cut through the tiny wire... mine did and separated about two months after install. I should have shaved the plastic coating and either soldered the connection or wrap the hell out of it. Otherwise it's a pretty straight forward install.
