I enlisted the help of my daughter today to lightly rev the engine so I could try to do a better analysis of my noises. I bounced around the engine bay with my handy screwdriver. Mostly I tried to listen in more places on the valve covers, and I made sure I listened in the same spots on both sides. I'm about the write the ticking off as normal. It is not audible from above without touching something to the motor and putting the other end in my ear. I haven't found a single "bad lifter" video that sounds like my car. I am also having a hard time imagining how it could take almost a year for a lifter to finish failing. Just doesn't make sense.

I also listened all over the intake for the chirping sound. The chirping really started around the time that I put in the intake/PTB/muffler delete a long time ago. The sound is not coming from the intake side. It's not even audible really in the engine bay. I have to get under the car to really hear it. I have a feeling it's just bouncing off walls when I hear it in the car. Even though I spent forever yesterday looking for exhaust leaks... I'm convinced again that it's a friggin exhaust leak at either the collector or catback band clamps, passenger side.

It only chirps when the engine torques around. That would explain why it only does it when it drops back to idle and when the car shuts off. Hell, it could even be that the clamps are just rubbing and not leaking. Whatever is going on... the squeaks are tied to engine movement for sure.

I'm gonna let this go for now. I might check the exhaust over one more time just to be extra thorough, but my paranoia is subsiding.

I have not. I was going to try and use my jack and a puck to put pressure on different parts of the exhaust under the car to see if I can affect the problem in any way. If I can get it to improve somewhat by doing that then I think I'll look for some better clamps for the slip fit at the collectors and the factory butt joint clamps.

I'll try tightening my mounts while I'm messing with the car. I'll try anything at this point! Maybe if I tear it down and upgrade from the cam up the noises will go away . I think with this little freakout I'll put those linkbar lifters in that you're always pushing.

Check to see that the alternator/compressor aren't loose? Any other clearance issues? Wires from your 02 sensor endeavor? Lol

Actually I do still need to check the alternator and water pump. My probe wasn't long enough . I'm pretty happy with all my clearances. It took several attempts to get this catback to stop rattling in the back. Rewiring the O2 sensors was the best idea ever. I read it over on ls1tech for another car, but it seemed like a pretty clever approach. Can you imagine what the next guy that owns this car is gonna think when he tries to figure out WTF is going on with the O2 sensors?

That looks like the bottom of the motor mount stud through the sub-frame.

Everything is prim and proper. What a b!tch. The day I finally figure this out is gonna be a good day.

How much pipe do I need to leave on the headers to avoid screwing up my O2 readings? I'm considering unhooking everything behind the connection pipes to rule out the majority of the exhaust.

I shook the motor around with the car off and there was no squeaking. Also, regarding the knocking... The car shows max 0.3x degrees of timing being pulled on tip-in occasionally. A little less than that even more rarely coming out of PE. It can't be too bad if the sensors aren't picking anything up right? That KR is nothing compared to what I saw on the stock tune. I'm pretty sure Jannetty wouldn't drop the sensitivity irresponsibly. I think I'll take my laptop with me so I can keep an eye on things this weekend. I took a lap around the outskirts of town just to give it a chance to get hot and romp on it a little bit. Nothing happened.

Does everyone agree that it's ok to pull the catback off the connection pipes and see if the chirp goes away? I'd rather not tote the laptop to the shop to monitor the car, but I can if I need to. I think I'm gonna go knock that test out after dinner tonight.
