I understand the need for AFM in regards to the gas guzzler tax. But why can't the car come with it on to satisfy the CAFE needs and still allow the owner to turn it off with out a warranty constraint?

Noob... You said it...
AFM is active fuel management... It's the process within the L-99 motors that shuts down up to four cylinders under cruise situations.... Cruising down the highway and no acceleration, it'll cut cylinders to save fuel... The LS-3 motors do not have it so they have a 1-4th shift pattern...within a certain range of rpm's vs throttle position, it will shift from 1st to 4th. Without these features, we would all have to pay a gas guzzler tax... at least the V8 owners would...

Because if you can turn it off you would have to pay the tax.

Robert and Fen are right, BUT I submit that if they allow us to turn off Traction Control, and Stabilitrac, BOTH of which have been lawsuits on car companies for not having, and yet don't allow us to delete AFM or turn it off, then are they putting money over safety?
I'm just playing devils advocate here. So now I see the other side as well. Allowing us to keep the warranty and delete it or turn it off, however, would be considered tant amount to enabling us to get around Cafe. GM wants us to be able to, but they must operate in a manner that makes sense for success. I love my halfshafts....... |

Your complaint should be to the government not GM.
This us mandated in the certificate process. GM could make it a selectable feature but would then be certified at the lower fE number and subject the car to the gas guzzler tax.

AFM - the reason I bought a manual, skip shift is easier to live with!
