Though I've never tried it with a 'newer' car, what about the trick of jumpstarting the vehicle and letting it run? If it runs for quite a while after jumpstarting, that discounts the alternator as the culprit, as it puts out enough 'charge' to keep the vehicle running, correct?

so, from 9 am 3 days ago to almost the end of day today, no verdict? Should have at least ran and got a new battery by now...

I've done that with cars that have generators, not alternators. I kinda like generators. Then again I like carburetors. I was born 40 years too late.

I've had batteries that were so dead they would not immediately jump start if ever. Sometimes I would disconnect the positive and connect the positive jumper directly to it so the battery would not suck up the current and the vehicle would start.

In every case where this happenened the battery would not hold a charge and needed to be replaced.

Dealer said he cleaned cables and it started fine. Also says the transmission is leaking and I haven't let him now if I want him to continue working on it yet

There ya go "Automotive 101, The Basics."

Always without a doubt the first thing to check. Sometimes it's the simplest things that can bite you. Good reference for the future, had you done so when it failed to start you could have had it back on the road in just a few minutes.

Picking it up tomorrow. The starter was bad and the battery is good but I'm still going to replace it before winter. They are also fixing a transmission leak. Total cost $800 :(
