DJ ATOMIX drove his SS up here in Edmonton in the snow recently. He's getting a brand new Camaro V6 shortly from the insurance payout from when his SS met a tree....

I've had my SS out and about all year, and so far we've had nearly 70" of snow here in Philly and supposedly another storm coming tonight. While I have had to work from home 2 days (when we got a 28"+ storm), the ONLY problem I ran into was pulling out of my driveway one day. The neighbor had dug their car out and put all the snow IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET! Being on a slight hill going that way, I wasn't able to get enough momentum to push through the 6"s of snow in the one lane that was "plowed" in my street. Snow hit the bottom of the car and got me stuck. Dug out around the tires a bit so I could back up and, thankfully, I have a 2nd way out of my development. Still had to deal with roads covered with 1-2" of packed snow and ice. Did the car slip? Hell yeah. But I was able to get out and get to work by being careful, and going the other way so I had a little momentum to get up the hill on the other side. Not a huge hill but about 400yds long. I DID NOT take it out in the middle of a storm, I ain't crazy, but have had to deal with snow and ice covered roads. And yes, I still have the stock summer tires on.
It can be done, just be careful and don't be stupid. She's been covered in road grime for about 2 weeks (until rain yesterday) since everyday things are melting and wetting the roads. I'll probably work from home again tomorrow if we get the 6"+ they're calling for, and then I'll go out Friday and go to work. Patience is a virtue in bad weather, use it.

dear chevy,
you're slick with your advertisement using the v-6. Only a sharp eye would notice that. the v-8 isn't nearly as forgiving if you even have a ghost of a thought of driving it even a little hard. |

Posi, traction control & ABS work wonders, even with marginal tires.

why does everyong keep refering to real world driving and it not handling there, even if it could handle there it wouldnt change your minds because your too afraid of salt doing god knows what to the car (rust even, doesnt matter what) its a damn car, use it. throw some winter tires on it, and get some form of protective layer from salt on the bottom of the car, im sure theres some sort of technology like that in this time and age.

Does anybody really think chevy made to video to sell the camaro as a winter driving machine? Of course not. How many people go out to buy a car for winter driving and say "hey, lets go look at camaros". This suppose to be like a funny beer commercial. Your not really suppose to take it to heart.

The v6 models have all season tires so no big deal , but the ss models come with summer only tires you'll never see a ss getting around in snow it will sit and spin.

This video does NOT apply to the 20s, I can attest to THAT...and it's MORE than snow and ice, it's the tread design AND compound of the Summer-only tires. They're NOT syped for snow, and the tread actually FREEZES at temps below 40F degree weather. They simply will not turn corners with much grip at any sort of g-forces below "pedestrian" levels...even on bare, clean pavement... Last edited by LOWDOWN; 02-24-2010 at 04:11 PM. |
