Oatman, Arizona
Decided to take a much older and scenic route from California out to Kingman Friday. I took the originally US Route 66 through Oatman, AZ in Mohave Country. The town itself is an old Arizona relic much like Jerome but far less well known. The town is mainly known for the wild burros (donkeys) that beg for food from the tourists. Outside of Oatman the Old US66 Route goes through the mountains over into Golden Valley and on to I40. The road doesn't go above 20 MPH in the mountains with good reason as there are no guard rails to keep you from plumpeting to your death hundreds of feet. Personally I think the speed limit coupled with the lack of traffic makes it an easier drive that 89A to Jerome but it still amazes me this used to be the primary route from Chicago to Los Angles.

I did a run up to Jerome last month with the local Camaro club. I think these towns are cooler though because they aren't commercialized like Jerome and Tombstone. There are a couple more of them out there in the state like Tortilla Flat, Globe and Top-of-the-World.

Wow, this brings back some memories. Last time I was in Oatman was 8 years ago. Thanks for posting all the pics! Looks like nothing has changed except the tourists cars are newer.

Good old Arizona.... Gotta love it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Tom!
One of my favorite rides back in the day was hitting Canyon lake and getting a burger down in Tortilla flat's. |
